I tutor on the course, feel free to PM with any questions (not on the politics modules, on the general sociology ones). You take politics modules with both semesters, but first years also take all sociology modules, you can check them out on the website: http://sociology.nuim.ie/

Irish Sociological Imagination and Thinking Sociologically are assesed by exam and essay, and Global Society is all exam. Workload is manageable; essays both terms, tutorial assignments and discussions. First year politics classes are small, about 20, but the general sociology ones have about 450, so you get a bit more lecturer engagement with the specific politics modules. Some sociology modules are mandatory throughout the degree they should also be on the website, but you will have a broad choice of electives for second and third year.

Its challenging and interesting, I can imagine many might find it boring but if you have the interest you will be rewarded

How can that question be answered when there haven't been any yet?

As it happens, I do :D

A B.A. wont get you very far if you really really like the subject and want to go for a research job, so you will probably need an M.A (as yet there is not one for politics but it could change when we start seeing graduates), or research degree.

People with social science degrees may end up in civil service, policy research, public administration of some sort. You will definitely have options anyway. E mail some of the lecturers and ask for a reading list for their politics modules if you want to know about the course content a bit more

2 Arts in first year and then one other one for the rest as far as I know.
    I'm thinking history, nice combination.

I just finished my first year in politics. Take my advice, and don't take it. It's poorly taught, not well structured and generally pretty boring. It has no tutorials [even though it BADLY needs it]. That being said, the essays and assignments were extremely easy. I didn't attend half the lectures and managed a 2-1 in each.

Boring in what sense? In the sense that you didn't enjoy the course material. Did you have an interest in politics in the first place?

My only advice is this; If you've very little or no interest in a subject, don't take it 'just because'.
