Is that a more moderate way to say tag rugby? :p Seriously though if there is 5 a side rugby where is it held?

I'd say he means five-a-side football.

I'm hoping to work on upper body strength and some work on my sprinting and agility. Core stability is also something I hope to work on over the next while. We haven't set a date for the start of pre-season training yet, but I'd imagine it will be August, like last year.

Running, swimming and practicing my kicking/ ball skills but certainly no fancy pants gyms for me :p. A good summer of farming though should do the trick :D.

I'd advise that you focus more on the lower body for development. Think about it, you drive all the time with your legs, the strongest upperbody counts for feck all if you cant drive through the hips/legs, obviously if you're lifting in the lineout some shoulder work will be helpful and close grip bench pressing for those handoffs;)

I do plenty of work on lower body, but in the off season I'm going to work on the above.

Second this statement its arguably the most valuable asset in your body to work on for a rugby player and believe me it ll pay off if you put the effort into it

yeah i meant 5-aside soccer...although the rugby idea might be a laugh....im actually in bits today, had a game last night and me knees are shot out! totally different movements and its non stop running...back to the gym later!

i agree with the lads on the lower body development....its largly ingnored by alot of coaches and self-styled training programmes...big guns might look great, but you look like a fanny when you get driven off the ball at ruck time!

Just back in from Brittas Bay with the Gaa girls running, sprinting bit of ball work then in up as far as our waste in water to top it off! tag starts off friday also had the option of playing soccer but the current state of my knee will not let me do it plus a little bit of gym work!

Anybody who splits their routine into bodyparts while training for a sport - which due to it's very nature uses the whole body - is at best trainign inefficiently and at worst setting themselves up for injury.

Weaknesses in the body will be revealed and addressed within a functional, total body program. If necessary, assistance exercises will be added in. But they should not become the core of your program.

I know I've said this often here, but playing Rugby League over the summer is a great way to keep fit / get fitter plus work on your tackling and ball carrying. For those of you who watch it on TV and find it boring - I found it really is a lot more fun to play than it is to watch.

There's always a good mix of people who played it regularly down-under and union players who are new to it. Thankfully (apart from occasional spat online), there isn't the big divide between codes over here that you see in other countries.
