Quick and easy way of diagnosing a BSOD?

Hey guys, I recently sold my Dell laptop to my brother. It BSOD'd on him today while it was shutting down. He wasn't doing anything unusual at the time - just ripping some CDs - no new hardware or software. It doesn't seem to be a frequently recurring problem.

I'd like to help him diagnose the problem but he's miles away and not too tech-savvy. Are there any checks/tools I can ask him to run? Or any other advice I can give him?

The BSOD should have included a stop code, that's the first place to start.

You can dump the code into Google search and it will normally bring up a page from the MS Knowledge base with some answers.

Thanks guys, I've told him how to look for the stop code if/when it happens again.

The error should have appeared in Event Viewer (in Computer Management and a few other places).
