Change your PSN ID?

Probably a stupid question but how do you or can you change your PSN ID, on the 360 its simple to do as theres is an option clearly displayed on the menue to do so but it costs 800MS points. I'm assuming its free on the PSN. Or do I have to create a new account, if I do do I still get to use all the stuff I have bought…
