was on my way up North today , to check out prices on the d 300 , when i needed something to eat , and went to this village i never heard of near Drogheda , Donore . I saw this wonderfull burnt out cottage , i thought it was a tourist thing , Boyne battle etc., it turned out it was the home of Frank, who was an ex politician , early instigator of the Peace process , who had his home burnt down a couple of weeks ago . Not only did he lose his home , but most of his wonderfull possessions , a lovely courageos man , life can be cruel

Franks burnt home -- first impression for me

    Hi Baz
I've enjoyed your photos and watching your style develop over the last couple of years. These shots are good. What I like especially, is the background information you've given on these photos. Saves me having to make my own mind up about them and judging them on technical merit alone. A few words with a photo makes it stick in my memory.

Oddly enough I prefer the 1st one.
2nd one is seeking too much sympathy...
1st one def captures the story that Baz told too.

for anyone who is interested, D300 is STG£851 with Dixons Tax Free. Sawi t yesterday in Birmingham Airport and managed to resist temptation (this time). Dixons Tax Free are located in various UK airports on the airside and you can buy from them as your fly on elsewhere (even in the EU and even within the UK). The £851 is £999 less VAT so what you save is the VAT.

A person who shall remain nameless (who I believe is also from Drogheda area) and his job was selling house insurance etc to people.

His house burned down. He was uninsured.

Back to topic, I believe that fundraisers are being done to help Frank in this awful time

really nice chap , he lost some great momentos , photos with Mother Theresa , and irreplaceable memoirs from an interesting life.
I promised i'd give him a couple of my images and go to his do in Drogheda , the terrible thing was in the field next to him a German tourist was murdered in 2001 , so i guess that put his tragedy in prespective

Frank was always a kind of larger-than-life character around Drogheda and a really lovely man. He was always likely to utter a 'bertie-ism' any time he opened his mouth...:D
One story I heard, although it could be just an urban legend, was that the Drogheda Corporation were discussing putting gondolas on the boyne as a tourist attraction. After much discussion, Frank chimes in with 'It's all very well putting gondolas in the Boyne, but who's going to feed them?'

Don't know how true that is, but it's certainly the kind of thing he could've said
