Personally, I'd suggest checking for second-hand stuff from Frankonia, eGun and Euroshooting. You should be able to pick up something fairly nice, like this or this. The first even has the match 54 action. Both sellers state they won't sell out of Germany, but you'd be surprised what a polite enquiry will get you. The CZ's are lovely rifles, but no need to write off Anschutz and the like as out of your budget either just yet. If you want the mega-accuracy of a target rifle though, you'd have even more options on that site, and your son would be able to do the prone and 3P side of things as well if he so decided. Best of luck anyway.

For benchrest, most lads seem to use the Anschütz target rifles as the basic barrel and action and then play around with the stocks. The CZ looks pretty good, but the stock wouldn't really be suitable, so you're into expense right there.

You can buy second hand match rifles from Frankonia or elsewhere and the stock can be used sdtraight away for BR.

I'm thinking in terms of €200 - €300 here, remember those Match barrels pretty much last for ever.

Here's a Walther and a Baikal both for under €300.

    And an Anschütz for €500

BR rifles couldn't be accused of being pretty anyway. :D

    Lad's a BSA International mk 2 .22lr with but hook for £225 Stirling .
    2 questions :
    1. is this suitable for benchrest?
    2. can a scope be fitted or would this go completely against the grain of what gun was designed for?

    Cheers lads.

    1. Yes

    2. Yes (with a bit of ingenuity or the use of an old barrel mounted scope) and kind of, but since it's unlikely anyone will any longer use it for its original purpose, does that matter?

    You didn't ask, but FWIW I think it's a little over-priced.

    Are you right- or left-handed?

Right handed and as to the original use of the gun, I'd just wouldn't like to destroy a nice piece of shooting originality by fitting a scope. But if you think it's over priced thats enough for me.
    thanks.

Some of those BSA's were fitted with dovetails for scope mounting. They're a martini action rifle and very accurate indeed. The rear sight is mounted on the side of the action, hence the need for dovetails.

Sandy, the price is going up for these. There's a big demand for them in the States and that's been driving the price up.

The last one that I know of sold here for €250 about three years ago.

If the scope is selected and/or mounted sympathetically the gun won't be harmed.

On prices, I was going by guntrader. Curiously I see a MkII there for £200, seller in Dublin, but it's left-handed, hence my question.

A query to Yardman9 on the Stirton site would probably yield good advice on current prices for BSA's in the UK.

I didn't mean to put you off buying it, just that from the prices I had seen it might be worth a bit of haggling. Depending on your exact requirements and the condition of the BSA, it might be worth buying. If nothing else you can be pretty sure it'd be more accurate than any Brno or CZ you'd get.

If you're going to opt for unlimited then an anschutz/bsa would be perfect.
For sporter class the CZ will outshoot anything else around.
Trigger is easily adjusted to break cleanly and lightly.
Was using a CZ varmiter myself until last year and they're brilliant.
People will tell you the barrells wear but anyone that uses cz never seems to have witnessed any drift in accuracy ....remember for sporter class the scope is limited to 6.5 mag max.....for unlimited class u can use what u like.
check out ukbenchrest.org for more info.

So, if I got the CZ technically I could fit a 6-24x50 scope and :
      1. use it for sporter class (at 6 x)
      2. use it for unlimited class (at 20x)and give it a good run for the money
      3. also go bunny bashing
yes - no or do I sound like I'm trying to talk meself into buying another CZ:eek:

Just remember that if you're using a CZ, you can only compete in Sporter class. The real competition is in the Unlimited class. Vinniew will have a more detailed view of things, but looking at the results from BR competitions, that seems to be the situation.

yes....just have to tape the adjustment so it cant be moved...just remember there's a weight limit too....and the bigger the scope the more weight you carry

yes you can ....but....in this class most guys are using either dedicated br rifles of heavily customised target rifles if they want to be competitive.
I've seen a guy in the uk with a heavily customised CZ varmiter...it's a ery helluva rifle and very competitive....check out that website...details of it there.
        3. also go bunny bashing
        yes - no
not with a trigger thats of any use in br....way too light for hunting from a safety perspective.....and i'd never trust the safety catch....

My varmiter used to let go if ya breathed on it....

or do I sound like I'm trying to talk meself into buying another CZ:eek:

imo....the best value in shooting there is.

Thats why I'm looking at the 453 which has the set trigger as well! and both triggers are ajustable.

        Thanks Vinniew
