A lot to talk about in this match. Waterford down some major players, Clare introducing three debutants and the G.A.A. in their wisdom have decided to use Limerick as the venue.

I don't want to start using excuses before a ball is thrown in but I think the injuries are after crippling Waterford. Clare are our bogey team and we find it hard to put them away (although there was that 19 point hammering, glorious!) even with a full team. If we have any All Ireland ambitions this year then Waterford should be able to depend on their squad (Big test!) to overcome Clare who I would still regard to be a long way off an All Ireland this year.

Can anyone tell me much about the three new Clare players. Are they up to much?

For Waterford supporters the journey back from Limerick is always an absolute nightmare. I have yet to meet someone who is going on Sunday and this is from rain, hail or snow supporters who haven't missed a championship game since they were bloody born.
There will be at least 5000 less Waterford supporters than normal at the match and it's a major mistake by the G.A.A.
(Waterford haven't had a great record there in the past if memory serves me right which isn't going to help)

    Up the Deise!!

Well I'll be up there anyway. Have to get from Kilkenny to Limerick on the Sunday (up in KK for the Cat Laughs on Sat), which is a nightmare.

Its not gonna be easy, but I fancy Waterford to win

Oh and shame on Waterford supporters who dont turn out as they usually would for this. The venue or journey to/from Limerick is no excuse.

Get out there and support the team who have given up a lot of time to train for this.

Have we suddenly become like Kilkenny and supporters only turn out for big matches? I hope not.

I predict a draw.Clare need to get to a final in either Munster or All-Ireland(not bloody likely) to really call themselves contenders.

I'm travelling from Dublin for it and expect to see a Waterford win. Even with the injured players missing I think we have enough in reserve to dispatch Clare - they are in transition and I wouldn't expect a serious challenge for AI until next year or 2010.

Throw in is at 2 bells. This has the making of a great match hope it lives up to my expectations. I know all the money is heading in clares direction at the bookies but I still fancy waterford to do the business. Will be a dog fight though. Heres hoping for a dry day.

Oh & I know the journey is a disaster for the waterford supporters but look on the bright side tis a bank holiday weekend - whats the hurry home - couple of pints after the game is all part and parcel of the big day out

    Waterford (SH v Clare): C Hennessy; B Phelan, K Moran, A Kearney; T Browne, D Prendergast, J Kennedy; M Walsh, D Bennett; D Shanahan, G Hurney, S Molumphy; J Mullane, S Prendergast, E McGrath.

Very weak looking team. Big risk with Hurney in there, that's going to be interesting. (He played Clare footballers last weekend)
Full back line doesn't fill me with a whole lot of confidence but it never really did anyways, always our weak link.
We are badly going to miss Ken at centre back and I can't see Declan Prender filling his boots very well.

However if we can get going well in the forwards we have a chance. I can see a lot of frees in this game and Bennett is going to be important.

    Go on the Deise!

How long is Ken out for?

As it turns out, I'm heading to this game myself. Hoping to see a good game. Never been to Limerick before, so I'll have to explore the pubs afterwards too. :)

This does look a very beatable waterford team you could pick holes all over it, full back line looks dodgy and will probably be even weaker when kearney has to move to the half back line (cant see that half back line lasting 70 mins)mullane looks caught for pace lately which was hes biggest asset shanahan not 100% fit, debutant centre forward (only in the panel a few weeks afaik) I can really see a clare upset in this one and thay love playing in limerick as well

Don't forget bout the Leaving and Junior Certs starting Wednesday. I barely miss a Waterford championship match but considering me and tons of deise fans are doing the LC in 5 days, missing a full day isn't really possible, especially when taking the amount of hassle it is to get from Waterford to the Gaelic Grounds.

I fear the Waterford support on the day could verge on embarrassing, and the GAA should take the blunt of the blame for this. Fact is, this is meant to be a neutral venue, yet Waterford fans will have a 5-6 hour round trip to contend with, if not more. I remember coming back from the NHL final in 2004, an absolute nightmare. The average Clare fan, meanwhile, should be there and back again in an hour and a bit.

Now I know how Antrim must have felt when they were forced to play matches in the south of the country at 2pm in the afternoon.

As for the match itself, I still expect us to pull through, despite the recent injuries. Thankfully theres a sense of deja vu between now and the start of 2004. We had horrible NHL final against Galway, the papers slaughtered us, then we came out against Clare and stuffed them by 19 points. This year we haven't had a great league, we've been written off by nearly everyone so hopefully we can use that for our adventage like we did 4 years ago.

What those nay-sayers forget to mention is that 2 weeks ago we had a great challenge match in front of a huge crowd in Walsh Park and played close to championship-level hurling. We won in the end by 2 points and you could already tell the Waterford team were a different one to that that laboured through the league.

It is a weakened team, but we're still way more experienced and there's still individuals on our starting 15 that can do some serious damage to the Clare back line. Waterford to win by 4 or 5

Very poor performance today - looked flat and uninterested. Dan looks a long way off full fitness, Brick didn't look sharp, molumphy was dissapointing, Moran, Phelan, Kennedy & Declan Prendergast were way off the mark. Bennett's frees and Mullane's 8 from play kept us in it. Thought Aidan Kearney played well at corner back

Surely it'll be Antrim at the ned of the month on our path through the qualifiers

Whio knows how far that'll go??

    Come on the banner!

Long time coming a win in the Munster championship. Played well and hassled and harried(sp?) for every ball. The new lads didn't do too bad.

Mullane was all Waterford had and personally I hate the sh→t of kissing the jersey but he is a fantastic hurler and did all he could for him team.

Sorry lads, waterford were just outclassed by a team that had a fair bit of young blood too!
Just home from the match, going putting out the saffron & blue now!
    Come on the Banner!!!!! :pac:

Waterford are really nothing without Ken McGrath imo.Great to see the neighbours win in Munster for a change.
Hope Clare win Munster.I would love to see Galway-v-Clare for All-Ireland.

    C'mon The Banner County

waterford were absolutely shocking today! Ken mcgrath and eoin kelly are huge losses. And from what i heard that waterford have Galway next, thats their championship over. A terrible defence which Joe canning would go to town on. For clare, they will struggle. Limerick will be tough but it they come through that and meet cork (thats if cork make it!!) they will not win munster. Cork for years know how to beat clare!! my reckoning, galway kilkenny all ireland!!

Limerick have to prove last year was not a flash in the pan.

Cork will earn it against Tipperary - a team I fancy for Munster.

It would be nice to see Clare, or Limerick win Munster but IMO the winners will come from the Tipp Cork game next Sunday. Galway Clare in the All-Ireland would be nice, but its a bit far fetched..

As for the lad who siad its Galway next for Waterford - that will only work if Galway loose to Antrim. If Galway win they play Laois. Antrim (on the condition that they loose to Galway) will end up playing Waterford.

If I was a Waterford man tonight, I would be slightly worried. They didn't seem to have any fight today (with the exception of Mullane). They dont seem to have the strenght in dept that is probably required for an All-Ireland.

Clare showed some of the old passion, tenacity that made them great in the mid-ninties, and if they show the same standard of commitment the next day out, then they will cause LImerick a lot of problems.

One quick question. ANyone know why the camera's were on the opposite side of the pitch today - normally they are in the stand facing out. Was it down to TV3's choice???

    Dublin in the Leinster final.

For me that'd beat winning the All Ireland in football anyday.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,908 ✭✭✭Daysha

First we play Antrim. (Assuming Galway don't **** it up)

In phase two theres two matches between the Munster semi losers and the Leinster semi losers. You'd expect the two Munster teams to win.

We play one of those two winners. Thing is though, teams will be separated if we've already played them. Therefore, if Clare lose to Limerick, that leaves the loser of Cork/Tipp. But if Clare beat Limerick, we could be meeting Limerick aswell.

Win there and its onto the QF against either the Munster or Leinster finalists. Get through that and that leaves either the Munster or Leinster champions in the semis.

Tbh I'd gladly take Limerick over Cork or Tipp in the qualifiers, so anyone else who feels the same would really want to be shouting for Clare against Limerick in a few weeks.

Not sure about that, but I thought the camera work in general was brutal, found it very hard to follow the ball.

The sun didn't help either, but saying that the angles were strange, I suppose it can only get better as they cover more hurling matches.
Overall though the tv3 coverage wasn't too bad the studio analysis was good, better than Trevor Welch talking sh!te anyway !!

Clare were good I was really happy with the performance, Roll on Limerick now who are not to be underestimated they still have a good team and will be hungry after doing so well last year.

Agree totally - the replays of incidents went on too long from different angles while the live game was continuing - very frustrating. Was difficult to follow the ball from puck outs or fast play too
