A strong earthquake measuring 6.1 has hit southern Iceland, 50km (30 miles) from the capital, Reykjavik.
Residents in the capital felt buildings shake, but it is not yet clear if there were any injuries.
In the nearby town of Selfoss buildings are reported to have been damaged and residents have poured onto the streets in panic. The US Geological Survey said the earthquake struck at 1546 GMT at a shallow 6.2 miles (10 km).

    has Bork been singing again!

My geology isn't up to scratch but is an earthquake possible off the coast of Iceland that can cause a tsunami? Good to live in Dublin all the same :D

 The disrespect shown to Bjork (quite possibly the coolest person EVER) angers me.
An earthquake in Iceland isn't all that surprising: there's quite a few fault lines there, which is why they've so many volcanoes.
Not sure how likely a tsunami would be though.

As far as I know, if the earthquake caused a landslide into the sea there might be a tidal surge that would hit UK and Ireland. I'd say we're OK though if it hasn't happened after 5 hours.

You missed a bit at the back :P

While in Geography, very few seemed to be as disturbed as I was about plate techtonics. But I suppose while everyone elses mind were on more hormonal issues I was stuck to the books.

I did manage to catch up though :pac:

Alot of us dont take the likes of this very serious. Actually, I scratch that, we have little real life experience to base it on. Because the closest we've gotten to it is a little rattle somewhere around Wexford around the '80's afaik (a lot of guess work in there).

Anyway, on topic: from what Ive read so far, it doest look like there were many injured, thankfully.

I was in bed about a year ago, in my old house in Wellington with a MIGHTY hangover, so I was already hallucinating and having serious DTs when suddenly it felt like someone was pushing my bed from underneath then the bed started rattling against the wall and I was lying there in disbelief thinking I was either being haunted or had finally gone completely off my rocker. Anyway I just didn't even believe it happened and at work the next day my flatmate emailed me to ask if I felt the earthquake last night. That explains it, I thought. I replied telling her I thought it was ghosts etc. and she forwarded it to her friends and it got around half the offices of Wellington, everyone thought it was hilarious that I didn't know how an earthquake felt ffs, scary sh*t!!!

Iceland just happens to be where the North American and Eurasian tectonic plates meet.

It's a mad place. If you put a pipe in the ground practically anywhere you'll get hot water. They have outdoor hot-tubs everywhere.

They're practicing evacuations there all the time coz they know that if one of the volcanoes erupts or lava just spurts up from under the glaciers... bad sh!t will happen.

They are due something big fairly soon though...

they had something big all the time i was there in 2000 the year after the volcanoe went and melted a glacier it did some damage but the bridges are all flimsy cos they know they are going to get tossed at some point this one Vatnajökull:
    http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/sci/tech/3982273.stm

hekla not erupted since 1991 mind you it smokes all the time

    http://volcano.und.edu/vwdocs/volc_images/europe_west_asia/eruption_history.html

as someone said earlier they are on the mid atlantic ridge where two tectonic plates meet so not really surprising to have a big earthquake

takes me back sitting in a hot pool with hotwater running down the side of the hill and a river with glacial meltwater next to it great place to go

    Takes me back also...

Can't wait to go back. Maybe when I'm finished college i'll be able to afford to go back again!

Yeah, I was in the place there where the meeting of the tectonic plates is most visible. There is a gap, just like as if it were snapped open like a digestive dipped in a mug of tea.

There are some really cool caves in it too. I was in one that goes on for ages. Its just like a really long tunnel where the glaciers moved through and left it after them. Completely dark in there. Amazing when you turn off your torch. You can even see your hand.

I seen the bridges that they put up after the floods alright. They aren't meant to last for 50 years by the look of them.

The one at the ice lagoon at Jukulasarlon is a bit more permanent. It's the one that was on that Top Gear programme, when Hamster raced a guy in a canoe with an engine in it, in a crappy jeep.
