Question on Climate Control

So we all know that cars use more fuel when aircon is turned on.
I've noticed when the climate control is on and is heating the car, the A/C light comes on too for quite a while.
I thought A/C only cooled cars - what is it doing when the car is heating up?
And is it using fuel when doing this, or only in cooling mode?

A/C can run on hot or cold air, it dehumidifies the air in cold weather, which means you won't get condensation on the windows. the amount of extra fuel used by having A/C on in a modern car is tiny. don't worry about it.
