Vintage Guitars

    Hi,

I love vintage guitars - I don't own any yet buy would love to buy one of two. Preferably fenders from 60s or 70 (not pre CBS - i'm not loaded!) but i'd take a look at others makes as well.

    I know there is http://www.kilkennyvintageguitars.com/

But is there anywhere else that gets vintage guitars in from time to time. Or anyone know of a shop that has some in at the moment that I could take a look at.

They do seem to be a bit overpriced here compared to the states. Maybe i'd be better going to the US and picking up a couple over there especially with the exchange rates.

Any thoughts or suggestions or comments?

A trip to the UK would probably be your best bet if you want to buy vintage guitars from a bricks & mortar store. It would be cheap enough that you could just browse around without actually buying if nothing cropped up. Make a weekend of it.

Instrumental (on the quays) took over the unit beside them and had some sort of 'vintage' section going at one stage....its so long since ive been near them i havent a clue how it ever worked out

Yea that seems to be gone now though i think - there is some kind of fettish clothes shop in its place now. I had a look there at the time but didn't see much. Had a couple of old suziki electrics with f-holes but didn't see too much else.

Yea UK might be an option alright now thet the GBP has weakened a bit against the EUR. Cheers.

You might have left it a bit late to pick up 70's Fenders, the prices have pretty much doubled in the last few years. Even the worst 70's Fender dog is a desirable item right now for some reason and, in my opinion, they're just not value for money if you're buying an instrument to play, you can get much better guitars at much cheaper prices right now. You see some popping up on Buy and Sell or adverts at absurd prices and I'n not sure the UK would be any better. I was in Liverpool and London over the last few months and the price of them over there was just as bad as it was over here. Ebay is probably the cheapest place to pick them up still, but you're in with the sharks there. The value of vintage is dependant on everything being original. There are a lot of people out there looking to exploit folks who don't know what they're looking at, so make sure you do your homework before you offer money for anything. Yer man in Kilkenny is sound, he's happy to let you play whatever you want, but the prices are matbe a bit over the going rate. It is worth a trip down though.

If you're just set on the retro look, rather than the "mojo" of a 30 year old guitar you should have a look at the likes of http://www.nashguitars.com/ who'll build you whatever you want, to a very high standard, and then make it look as old as you want.

The Kilkenny Vintage website always amuses me. He's asking for €1350 for a used and dinged 1988 American Standard Strat. It's 20 years old. It is not vintage. Why would you pay €1350 for a 20 year old Strat, with no vintage value whatsoever, when you could get a new one for about €800...?

I know its not everyone's favourite place at the moment but I have had some great deals for old / vintage Fenders off eBay.
