I plan to change my Ruger mark11 243 to a rifle in 308 caliber. Some sort of target shooting at the Midlands Range would be nice along with the stalking. Is the 308 my best option? Can anyone recommend a suitable make of rifle or should I stick with Ruger in 308
Advice welcome, budget of €2000. Thanks lads.

Before you do anything give John Greene a call at 086-3554425 world class gunsmith herein Ireland. He could I imagine easily fit a custom barrel to your Ruger .243 and still leave you with enough change to buy a good quality scope like the new variable sightron (very close nightforce runner up ) 8-32x selling for $800, Edgar Bros Uk importers Other than that look at CZ550, Howa varmint, Steyr ssg p2 all capable of high accuracy fitting your budget.

Jhn built me a Remy actioned 22-250 on an AI stock - 1/4 inch at 100yds, apple of my eye. Lapped Bolt-face, QD mounts, Jewel trigger - class really. But i never really subscribed to the 250 for deer

    Have you looked at a 6.5 X 55?

Thanks for the reply lads. I will start to ring around and get some Idea of prices. The 300 win mag, Is it not very expensive for target shooting. I don't know very much about the 6.5x55. I have heard only one manufacturer supplies the ammunition it uses and it is sometimes hard to find in stock.

I have been planning for some time to stalk in Scotland and the information here regarding the use of 308 and 270 for large deer encouraged me to finally make the change. Do we follow the same standards here? Red.

i shot in 300 win mag but they do it in 308 the 300 s are about 40 bucks a box,i know stalkers in scotland that use 243 but these men do it for a living ,the 270 is king in scotland its so flat shooting and hard hitting the 6.5 is not a good round for hill stalking i have no time at all or it the 25.06 is worth a look

I only mentioned the 6.5 as the OP said the rifle is for targets and stalking. I prefer .308 myself, but its horses for courses.

That doesn't sound right at all. My impression is that it's widely manufactured, especially in Europe, and not difficult to obtain.
