    Baldurs Gate series
    NWN
    Planescape Torment

Off the top of my head those come to mind.

The best one is undoubtedly Planescape Torment, even though it works on an old RPG system. In my opinion, the Icewind Dale games aren't bad, though there are a few of the "unsolvable" puzzles that annoy me a lot.

Baldur's Gate is alright, if a bit linear. Baldur's Gate 2 isn't worth much in my opinion and the Baldur's Gate with the 3 character choices (which I cannot remember the name of) sucks.

If you want Science Fiction, then Knights of the Old Republic is your best choice, but again, all computer games are linear to a certain extent.

    My two bits.

Baldurs Gate: Dark Alliance? I'd heard that was a bit bollocks alright, don't really think of it as part of the series, more a completely different game in the same setting. Since it A) Doesn't fit in the plot and B) Doesn't have Minsc.

    Oh, and KOTOR++. Excellent game.

Elder Scrolls 4 - Oblivion (can you get this for pc?!)

Sure you can. I think Oblivion just lacks the charm that Morrowind had. The main plot is certainly miles ahead of it.

Sci-fi wise, I cannot stress enough how much you should be wanting to get a hold of the Fallout series. They're really deep, really funny, and will suck months out of your life.

The younger brother has morrowind - haven't had time to install it or invest in it (GTA4 is a curse!)
Oblivion is an excellant game, you never have to do the main quest if you want!

I prefered Morrowind to Oblivion, Morrowing was just... bigger. There's so much more to do, Oblivion just seemed to be lacking somewthing. Both excellent games, however.

Yeah, I'd strongly reccomend Baldur's Gate.

Well, he didn't like Icewind Dale so I doubt he'd like Baldur's Gate and the other similar RPGs. I'll suggest Elder Scrolls Morrowind/Oblivion and Fable then.

I'd recommend you give Guild Wars a look too. It's a mmorpg, but no monthly fees and you can avoid the mmorpg's biggest flaw (other players) completely if you like. It's way more story driven than any online game I've seen, there's buggerall grind, and the story itself is really quite excellent. Actually there are 3 good stories if you get the massive expansions.

One of my current guilty pleasures is Dwarf Fortress.

Oh yeah, Sarky said Fallout, they're great fun, just all round kinda cool, and the third is coming out soon so why not get into them now? :D

I had considered that, but IMHO Baldurs Gate was much much better than Icewind Dale, so who knows.

Guild Wars is another good one, only MMO I've ever been interested in enough to spend money.

Icewind Dale was very much your classic not-particularly-inspired dungeon crawl where it was pretty much just fight after fight loosely tied together with a very average storyline (Almost any D&D player will be familiar with this formula :) ), whereas Baldur's Gate was very much story-driven, and it involved the characters. In Icewind Dale it didn't matter who was in your party or what alignments were there, the story went exactly the same way regardless, but Baldur's Gate had a lot of side-quests based on everyone in your party, and some of the choices you made were very important to how the story went, and having mixed alignments led to friction and quite often your party tearing itself apart.

    *shrug*
