Shifting gear problem

My mates Honda Cb 250 is getting increasingly harder for him to shift into neutral and change gear. Anyone any idea what the problem could be ? Could he fix it himself by altering something like loosing/tightening the gear cable or something simple before bringing it to a garage ??

Check the clutch cable/ adjustment. If it is stretched or on the way out it will affect the clutch performance which in turn will make it difficult to manage the gears.

The gear teeth might be worn or damaged and might require replacing (gearbox rebuild)...

Very very unlikely. The gear teeth are in mesh all the time. The selectors or dogs might be worn if the bike pops out of gear.

Almost certain the problem here is the clutch not disengaging properly due to a badly adjusted or failing cable, but also worth checking the idle speed, if it's too high it would have the same effect as the clutch.

In Cavan there was a great fire / Judge McCarthy was sent to inquire / It would be a shame / If the nuns were to blame / So it had to be caused by a wire.

It's possible Steffano that there is something bigger wrong with the bike, but no point scaring the owner until they've checked the simple things! :)

True... But I like scaring people! lol

I think the gear teeth on my race bike (CBR 600) are worn (gears sometimes pop out and I have a fair few false neutrals) and because the OP is talking about a Honda CB I thought, perhaps, it could be that problem...

    I hope I'm wrong though!

make sure your drive chain is properly adjusted (though, doubt that'll help ya find neutral...)
