New Clubs - A complete overhaul...

I'm not one for changing clubs too often. I played a lot of golf with my old sticks back in the day. They were a little bit dated and spec'd for me when I was a better player. I also came into some serious voucher-action so without parting with pretty much any money I've been able to put together a new set.

    IRONS

    - IN - Finally made a decision after hitting a load of demos and multiple threads on here. Didn't like the Callaways in the end and saw some dodgy reviews online for the X-20 Tour so went looking for something slightly sleeker.

Went for the Taylor Made Tour Burners. Quite fat and hacker-ish, a little bit off-set which becomes less down toward the shorter irons but still very neat looking at address. The Wedge sits particularly well.

Went for Project X 6.0 with half an inch and 2 degs up.

    - OUT - Moving from Ping i3+ Blades (pretty similar to the new S58s) but really just wanted to get something easy to hit and to get rid of the x100s in my Pings. Really not a fan of Dynamic Gold anymore.

The Burners are ordered so should have them in 10 days.

    Driver / 3 Wood

-IN - Got a G10 a couple of months ago and the matching 3 wood a couple of weeks ago. Both with Grafalloy Pro Launch Red. Both class.

    - OUT - Moved from the old Ping TiSI Tech which was a 7 deg x-flex proforce... it seems I was a complete dick when last I played golf properly ;) Also ditched a Titleist 975F 3 wood with x100 dynamic gold which was the worst golf club ever owned by anybody ever.

    Putter

    - OUT - Have had a Callaway Bobby Jones 2 since I was 16 (9 years). It says BJ-2 on the bottom, much to my friends' amusement. Great putter but has had the sh*t kicked out of it over the years and it doesn't come off the face of it as nicely as it used to - it might have become a bit delofted.

    - IN - The undisputed best putter ever - Odyssesy's copy of the Ping Anser with the White Hot insert. It's called the Odyssey Tour #1. Nice grip. Nice weight. Was gonna go for the Anser 4 with the new ping insert but the Odyssey is just immediately better when you pick it up.

    Hybrid

Never owned one. Getting some Titleist yoke. V2 shaft. 19 degree. meh...

    Wedges

Keeping my current 54 deg Callway rusty.

Ditching my old Trusty Rusty Cobra for a Callway lob wedge.

I dunno about that - I've had a few that would surely run it close! :)

I had the exact same club and it was equally rotten. Sold it on ebay in the end.

The Ping G10 driver could be about to go the same way too!!! One great round followed by 3 poor ones with it.

Graeme1982...Interested in your feedback on the Ping G10.

I Bought the Ping G10 draw 12 degree.

In demos and on the range it went very well.

However now I find I'm hitting a huge slice with it.

    How are you hitting yours?

Really struggled with it at the start. Then it came good. Now it's very inconsistent.

I have a real problem with turning the ball over with it (almost a duck hook). I just find it quite difficult to hit and very unforgiving at times. I also don't like the sound / feel when i hit that much. Even when it's a good one. First time i've ever had a ping driver and it'll be my last. My last two rounds i haven't hit it once and just hit the three wood.

It'll be up on Adverts or ebay soon i'd say!

I demo'd the G10 at a fitting/demo day at the local range. Didn't like it, like the above posters I had an unwanted fade the whole time with maybe 1-2 in 10 going straight. I have never really got on with Ping's for some reason, mostly have had TaylorMade woods & irons and happy with them.

I hit the G10 driver straighter and longer than anything I've ever hit.

No special customs - just standard with an S flex Grafalloy.

    AH Man, now Im jealous!!!

I played today and it was a disaster with the G10, had to leave it in the bag after 8 or 9 sliced drives.

Any tips on setup etc ShreikingSheet?

If your slicing the draw version, the only thing you can be doing is swinging way over the top and cutting accross the ball on the way down. It's likely that no matter what club you swing like this with, it'll give you a big slice.

So I'd say get a lesson just to right yourself.

Basically swinging "over the top" and "cutting accross" means the club head is hitting through the ball at a diagonal, rather than straight through at your target.

Put a club down at your feet so it's exactly on line, pointing at the target. Then put another paralell to that where the ball would be. The line that second club makes is how you should imagine the club follows though the ball.

If you tilt this second club, so it's pointing at something a few yards left of your target and it becomes no longer paralell to the club at your feet, this is the reality of what your club head does on the way through.

You can get the feel for this on a practice green. Just for a laugh, if you were to try put side spin on a putt, you might naturally chop accross the ball to make it spin sideways. All a slice is is spin on the ball.

I find if you understand why and how you're doing the wrong things it can be easier to fix them.

    Very interesting initial post.

    Two questions:

Where did you go / Who did you go to in order to figure out you needed "with half an inch and 2 degs up"?

How much for the "IN"'s? :p

Well I'll start by saying that my own opinion on custom fitting is that it can often be excessively detailed and, some (not all) elements of it have questionable results. Essentially, I think a lot of it is rubbish, some of it is obvious, and some of it is only really useful to the the +3 amateur looking to shave .5 of a shot off his scoring average and go on tour. But all that said, if you're quite tall or short, I think it is worth doing a basic custom fit job if you're forking out for brand new sticks

Anyway, i don't want to get into that so here's what I did...

In 2003 I was custom fit by Brendan McDaid for Ping i3+ irons. All the latest technology was used, computers, cameras, shafts with sensors in them - you name it. I didn't pay much for this as I was already regularly getting lessons from BMD and buying the irons from him too. I didn't want to move to longer clubs for control reasons and he took that into account, giving me 3 deg upright, standard length, Dynamic Gold x100s with custom size grips and 1 deg strong lofts.

Since then, I stopped playing golf for about 2 and half years but have recently come back to it.

These days, my younger brother (who happens to be the same height -6ft 4- and weight as me) has a similar swing and plays to a similar standard as I once did and hopefully will again. He's off 2 and has been fitted for Rifle 6.5, 2 degs up and half an inch long irons.

Given that I now accept that I should have always had a half an inch on my clubs, I took my brother's spec and after trying the 6.5s and 6.0s I decided to bump down my flex to 6.0.

Some people would argue otherwise but for me, given that with the help of friends and my club pro I hit lots of clubs with different lies, lengths and flexes when coming to my decision, that's plenty of info for me to be happy with my decision on spec. The pro who has given me a couople of lessons also fully agreed when I said to him about the spec I was thinking of.

As for the cost of the INs. I had vouchers to pretty much cover everything. Irons are 600 I think. Putter is 140ish. Picked up the driver s/h for 200 and the 3 wood s/h with the exact same shaft for 100. Dunno what the Titleist hybrid costs but I'll do a deal when I'm paying for the irons and the lob wedge I'll pick up off a mate who has a couple of spares or just buy in a shop.

    Thanks for the advice SS.

I wasnt a big slicer up to now, but you must be right, it must be I'm swinging differently.
