I'm looking for a 1930s/1940s vintage dress to wear for a few things this year. Does anyone know of any decent shops in Dublin where I could find one?

When you say 1930's, 1940s style..what exactly are you looking for? There are some quite different styles from the begining of the 1930s coming out of Art Deco to the late 1940s..

Anyway, here are a few ideas:
Try Retro in George's Street Arcade or else the Harlequinn just outside.
I'm more into the 1950s style however, but I have come across some nice things in there.
TBH though, websites (like ebay-you'd be suprised! http://search.ebay.ie/search/search.dll?from=R40&_trksid=m37&satitle=dress+1930s
or this little gem http://www.dollydagger.co.uk/products.asp?cat=26 ) or a trip to Camden Market in London might be your best bet... here be one of my favourites.. http://www.collectif.co.uk/shop/home.php?cat=256

However that said, I've found that by literally trawling through the shops in Dublin i've come up with some good pieces which with a few accesories here and there make up a good 1950s style outfit. Don't knock some of the old department stores like Clerys or Boyers-I feel really out of place in there at times but some of their stuff can work brilliantly when teamed up with say a topshop or Oasis cardi.

    The other option is DIY

Hope that helps, if you give me an idea of what type of dress-ie say the style of an certain actress (eg Katherine Hepburn, Ginger Rogers, Bette Davis) or from X film e.g LA Confidential, Chinatown, Casablanca, )

Seek and you shall find. :)

It's for a 30's/40's big band ballroom theme party, but I'm hoping to get something that's mainstream enough to wear to a few weddings as well.

So, I've no particular style in mind as such - literally anything from the 30's or 40's would work. I did have a look at ebay but the problem is finding something that fits right.
