Skype Phone on RTW Trip

I was struck recently by a technology that I never really used to its full potential: Skype. I was just looking up mobile phones (because I hate my Nokia 6280 - seriously stay clear of it!!!) and noticed the Skype phone on the 3 network.

Myself and my girlfriend are travelling around the world for a year next February (Central & South America, Australia, NZ, SE Asia) and I was thinking this free Skype to Skype internet calls thing could be a very easy way to call home for cheaper than usual.

Am I being stupid here? I know it works on 3G technology and i know you're required to top up by something like a tenner a month, but what I need to know is will this 3G technology work abroad and am I just wasting my money?

Worst case scenario: will skype work in some countries and normal roaming mobile work in the rest?

Im not 100% on this, but i think it would on '3 like home' which is any country 3 have a network, it costs the same as in ireland. Link here if your not familiar. When you open skype you have to choose one of the 3 networks to connect to.

Browsing Planet 3, and other data services, also costs the normal Irish rate and your usage abroad counts toward any fair use limits.

where you dont have 3 coverage you could use something like Skype to go, use international calls cheaply. linky

Are there any phones which have wi-fi and skype? Could be a good solution.

i'd be 99% certain that the skype won't work in countries that don't have 3 networks. the only country you listed that does is australia.

the next best thing is a symbian phone with wifi and fring.

you'd have to be in a wifi zone but you wouldn't have to carry a laptop around with you
