Poor iPhone reception

Have had the iphone a while now and I'm meteor bill pay and in what should be a very good area for coverage too.

Since getting the phone (i think) the reception has gone really down hill and calls drop all the time or nearly every call there will be some point where you can't hear the other person and have to call them back. The reception on standby is nearly always 5bars but on call it drops to 2 or 3. Other people have also said they cant make out what I'm saying some of the time too. I love the phone to bits but I'm wondering is this meteor, the phone or a combination of both?

I did have the odd reception problem with meteor before and I probably notice them more than some people as I've got free calls to meteor and free mins which I use a lot.

Is anyone else having similar issue and if so what network?

Poor reception is a common problem with the current iPhone. If you can, try and get a replacement phone but the reception will never be great. The placement of the aerial was an interesting design choice with this model

Edit: Just realised you're using an unlocked phone.

i've never had problems with my iphone reception, although i'm on O2 and the only places i use it is in clonskeagh (work) and bray (home) and in between, never seen it go below 3 bars.

No problems here either with the iPhone. Apart from the odd time a call goes straight to voicemail, even though the phone is doing nothing and just sitting in my pocket. I'm on Meteor too, use it in the city center.

The iPhone is not great RF wise. Teh antenna is at the base of the device, right where your hand goes. This is a bad design for a start. Any call you make the signal has to travel through your hand first, this will lose you a few dB (i.e. reduce coverage).

The people that are on meteor.. are you on bill or prepay? I found prepay to have better coverage.... but thats probably in my head. Could the signal be affected by anything? Its not the house but possibly cordless phones, wifi etc interfering with it more than it should do?

    I'm on billpay.

Cordless, wifi and all those operate on the 2.4Ghz band. Mobiles work in the range of 800-1900MHz, so it is unlikely they are affecting your reception.

Coverage will be no different for prepay versus postpay.

There is a thing called "Access classes" that will allow networks to differenciate between different levels of customers. This is purely for times when the network is conjested, a higher class of user would be allowed establish a call. It might be useful to block all users except the emercency services in the case of a huge disaster. As far as I know none of the networks have actually set up the access classes system.

Nothing to do with coverage though. Coverage is purely down to base stations & handsets, faults with either will reduce coverage levels. Also the absence of either mean no coverage:D
