Last time I remember eating rabbit was when my Mother cooked rabbit many years ago. I got a rabbit last night; head shot at 76 large paces away, say 75m, resting rifle on a timber fence. Must be my best shot yet.
Soaked the rabbit overnight in salt water, next day simmered for 2 hours with 2 carrots, 1 parsnip, 1 onion, and a little salt, low heat. Took meat from the bone, very tender, and added Dolmio Carbonara source, served with rice. Very nice.

Big thank you to Dwighet for taking me out with him on Saturday and showing me how to skin a rabbit. Dwighet now I know why I missed that rabbit on Saturday, my gun shoots high without the mod on.

Well done. They're tasty little buggers. I shall have to borrow a scope and bag a few some evening soon.

Good man Clive, hope you enjoyed it. And learning as you go along as well...still very much doing the same myself with the rifle and I own the thing for about 2 years. I'm getting to a comfortable level of confidence now. anyway, keep enjoying it Clive.

well done and glad you enjoyed the wild food and fair play to dwighet for passing on some skills. Once you skin your first rabbit its like every other one becomes second nature! In fact i think i might go shoot one or two myself tonight!

Baked in the oven (until the meat starts to come away from the bone easily)with an apple in the carcass - covered with cider & olive oil. My kids still think it's chicken they're eating! and no complaints so far.

I did notice that some of the major grocery shops are now starting to sell 'organic' rabbit at about 14 euro each.

i almost always take it off the bone before cooking, very nice in stir fry or place it in a zip bag for a day or so with curry powder or chilli or jerk seasoning. Gives it a lvely colour and takes only minute to stirfry.

Any takers for a game cooking recipe section on the shooting boards?:)

Either that or a hostile takeover of the existing cookery forum with piles of wild game recipes. I'm hungry now.

Also, 14 squids for a rabbit?! Extortion methinks. The local specialty butchers around here does them for about a fiver methinks. And of course there's always the 15 cent lead-based payment option. :p

Hmm, how about a sticky in the hunting forum? I definitely wouldn't mind seeing some recipes up for some of the stuff we're hearing about, and it could turn into a nice little database as people try new things and post the results. Any thoughts? Worth a go Vegeta?

I bagged a bunny a while back that tasted much beefier than other rabbit, not like chicken at all. Do the big males always taste that way? And, yes, I'm sure it was a bunny:pac:

Breeding season the big ones always taste a little off. the secret is to just shoot the grazers this time of year. a big bunnie only tastes nice in winter IMO
