Seconds from disaster....yes tune in and watch in horror whilst this TV show drags an hour's programming out of at most 20 minutes worth of actual content and narrative. Don't forget to tune in after each and every ad break for a full run down of what was discussed in the previous part of the programme. Comes complete with it's own Irish narrator so that you don't think we bought it for peanuts from one of the Discovery channels...air travel will never be the same again.

FWIW I actually enjoy this sort of programming, but really there's a time and a place and 7-9pm isn't it...I basically see it as RTÉ admitting that the prime time content they have can't compete with terrestial soaps and whatever else is showing on the satellite channels at those times.
Then we tend to see newer programming and in particular, RTÉ's already limited output of sci-fi stuck on at well passed midnight...
Don't even get me started on the amount of times they seem to repeat this lazy scheduling. I expect more for my license fee...but I don't see any one being too bothered about fulfilling those expectations.

i dont mind some of these programes, their alot better than watching some reality or talent show, why not put mega structures in this slot as well, instead of about 9am on a saturday morning when i'm usally still asleep,

There is a time and a place for these shows, it is called Nat Geo. :) Seriously using an Irish narrator is pants tbh.

Most of the US primetime shows are probably considered Post-Watershed viewing.

Though you could argue that CSI etc are no less suitable for 6PM than an Adolf Hitler / 999 type programme (though the latter probably sneak in by having an educational angle).

    I'm guessing they're cheap.

Everything I don't like is either woke or fascist - possibly both - pick one.

I reckon they're trying to fulfil their 'public service' element by showing 'factual' 'documentaries'. instead of imported light entertainment. I think the OP is slightly exaggerating when he says it's all plane crashes and nazis.

They're trying to separate themselves from tv3 and channel 6 (or whatever its called)

for instance, tonight they're showing a documentary about Ceausescu, which is probably a good thing since most Irish people probably couldn't locate romania on a map never mind talk intelligently about one of the worst totalitarian regimes of the 20th century.

Tomorrow they're showing something about the Bali Bombing, the next day its some 18th century volcano so at least it's fairly varied

On thursday they're showing a double bill of ugly betty. (2 feckin hours)

on friday they have a nature documentary about Bison, and a history documentary about bobby kennedy's assasination.

I also like the fact that they use an Irish narrator for the simple reason that by giving this guy experience and exposure, he'll be in a better position to go and make some original material at some time in the future (plus, it's a million times better than the god awful narration the americans have to put up with)

    You're not wrong there Ted...

As for the OP exaggeratingabout it being all nazis and planes, was around in a mate's house last night, sitting in the kitchen....TV was on in the living room...at about 8pm they showed a programme in B&W about WWI....this is prime time on the "youth" channel of RTÉ on a holiday weekend...it wouldn't be too much to ask for some more appropriate and dare I say it, youthful programming to be shown at this kind of time.
RTÉ2 also have a bad habit of repeating things a few months after they last showed them....you mention some doc about 18th century volcano....probably the 2 parter docudrama about krakatoa....I mean they've definitely shown this at least once already since christmas.
The show I alluded to in my other post, Seconds From Disaster is regular fare and I've seen at least a few of these shows repeated too...
I reman of the opinion that it's lazy and mostly clueless programming...

Well said. 9am on a Saturday morning is terrible for that programme.

They have shown those 2 at least 3 times in the last 6 months. At least on Nat Geo they show a more varied lineup. They even have brand new air crash investigation. ;)

I agree 100%. Terrible time indeed.

TV was on in the living room...at about 8pm they showed a programme in B&W about WWI....this is prime time on the "youth" channel of RTÉ on a holiday weekend...

RTE TWO hasn't been a youth channel in about 5 years, ever since they start to re-name the channel.

RTE TWO schedule works like this

    Monday to Friday
    06:00 - 05:30 THE DEN
    05:30 - 07:00 TTV
19:00 - 21:00 Documentries (The Nazis, WWI, Nature etc) and Champions League
21:00 - 23:00 Big Irish Shows (e.g. Pure Mule (Dramas), R&P, The Panel etc) and Big American Shows (Lost, DH, Prison Break, CSI etc)
    23:00 - 23:30 News On Two (Mon - Thur)
23:30 - 02:00 Movies, Smallville, Medium etc and Music shows like The Last Broadcast and Voice in another room????
    02:00 - 06:00 EuroNews/Nightscreen rte 2fm

    Saturday and Sunday

    6:00 - 12:00 THE DEN
    12:00 - 13:00 TTV: Home and Away
    13:00 - 18:00 Sport or Movies
    18:00 - 21:00 Documentries or Sport
21:00 - 23:00 Movie or the Sunday Game
23:00 - 02:00 Repeats of Irish and American shows shown during the week.
I reman of the opinion that it's lazy and mostly clueless programming...

Agreed regardless of wheather or not RTE TWO is to be a "Youth Channel" it should at least try to promote is documentries and try to be varied with their programme schedule during 7 - 9.
