    Trying to locate the drain plug from the block in order to flush the coolant on my 1981 six, but no joy...

    Came across this;
    step #2 is to remove the drain plug [19mm hex] from the right side of the engine block, towards the rear and 'behind' the rear exhaust manifold

    but no joy,:( has anyone carried out this procedure? help would be appreciated
    Cheers!

    On my 89 car its on the drivers side at the rear of the block. It's about half way between the sump and the head. As I remember, it's a 19 mil and it's bastard to get to, involving a socket uj and a long extension piece. You really need to get under the car to access it. Wear goggles as you WILL get soaked with coolant.

    I'm struggling with the exact same thing - '84 BMW 633 and can't for the life of me find the drain plug - any luck alpina?

    I have the Bentley's manual, with a picture of the plug, but it's too close in to figure out where on the engine block it actually is - any help would be very much appreciated!

    Cheers!

    It's exactly as Hifive says, however I guess best explanation is that it's almost countersunk (if this is the right explanation) lie flat with a torch/flood light pointing right at the block towards rear & go fish, literally search with your fingers & eventually will come across, if nothing gushes out start prying at, but leave open until something seeps through, have fun...

    Many thanks, alpina - I managed to find it from under the car - between cylinders 5 & 6 about 4 inches below exhaust manifold. For other readers, it's an extremely awkward bolt to get loose - I needed a socket with a universal joint set at about 45 degrees to get at it, since it's at a goofy angle. You also won't have much room to move the wrench, as you have to thread it through various parts of the suspension system. Once you have the socket on the bolt, close your eyes and start working it loose - when it comes loose, anti-freeze will gush out EVERYWHERE. After working the drain plug loose with the wrench, only a small trickle came out and I was able to unscrew the bolt with my fingers the rest of the way. Don't wear a watch - your arm will end up soaked with anti-freeze.

    Thanks again, alpina!
