Anyone know if the voltage in the cars (for charging things like a satnav while driving) over in the states is the same as here? Or will I need to get a different in vehicle charger for my satnav over there?

All modern passenger cars use the same 12V technology, the lead-acid battery has yet to be displaced as the power source and since it consists of 6 x 2V cells connected in series, the car's electrics are all 12V.

Short answer is that the cigarette lighter charger will work in any car anywhere.
