Okay I'm new to Dublin, on placement. Bored in evenings, everything is expensive up here - what is there to do up here?

Been trying and failing to figure that out. Sure it has some nightlife but other than that - where is its salthill, spanish arch and so on? Where do people go on a nice sunny day to relax after work and in contradiction to that go a bit mental?

    Where people where?

What about great outdoors? Surfing? Etc? Anything?

1.Dollymount...white sand, kite surfing. Hell you even get to go over a wooden bridge.
2.Makerel season coming so get a rod and head to Dun laoighaire or Howth.
3.Little breeze fluttering? Gotta be kite flying in the Phoenix Park or killiney hill.
4.Sunny afternoon...Frisby in the Iveagh gardens.
5.Thursday evening the National gallery is open late. So it's an hour with a Degas, carravagio, Van Gogh etc.
6.Get an inflatble boat and head to the War Memorial gardens for a paddle.
7.Dart to Killiney station, out to the beach where there are cracking flat stones for skimming across water.
8.Get an airgun and have shoot outs with mates around the follys in St.Annes park. No mates in Dublin...shoot at squirrells. (they love it!)
9.Get a mountain bike and pop some wheelys again around St.Annes where theres natural ramps set in a mini forest.
10.Score some skag, hang around mearchants arch and shout at people on the opposite side of the liffey. No skag? Go old school and get a glue bag!

10 of the best no pub things to do in the city...Oh 1 more:For an evening's adventure head to the Pine Forest after 11p.m for a spot of dogging before bed-time (bring the glue bag).

Like football? Head to an Eircom League match.

Maby some rugger? Surely Leinster are in action.

Fancy a stroll? Nothing better than a bit of Marley Park.

Fancy hitting up Aces like Andy Roddick? Head down to a tennis court. There are public courts in Marley.

Maby you think of yourself as a Padraig Harrington..try the multiple golf courses this city has to offer.

good list there. i'd also add the botanical gardens for a stroll, a bit of car racing on bull island, and concerts and theater in stephen's green... also dodge the junkie on the boardwalk

Leinster rugby is finished for the summer, Soccer season is underway if thats your thing.

Check out the Dublin Event Guide (Free Events) on facebook

Not everything in Dublin revolves around drinking (but most activities can be grouped that way)

Dublin can be an incredibly lonely place if you don't know anyone, so I'd suggest joining a club, keep an eye out for flyers in your area dancing, swimming, improv comedy, anything which can get you out and moving in the evenings.

I've set up a movie club, which are meeting up tonight (details in sig)

Sites like http://www.gumtree.ie/ can be pretty useful too.

    Surfing? Etc? Anything?

You are on the East coast now. There is surf here, you need the right conditions though. A strong Northerly will make Portmarnock work well. Salthill and Spanish arch are not in Dublin (Mind you, no surf in Galway). Here is a list of reasonable if not free things to do.

    Go sailing in Dublin bay.

Climb the Sugarloaf its only a hill.

Walk the full lenght of the Bull Wall.

Go to Howth and feed the seals.

Order chicken wings in Elephant and Castle.

    Go to the botanical gardens.

Shoot the sluice rappids on the river Liffey.

    Go to the Zoo.

    Do the Kilmainham Gaol tour.

Fish for Mackeral and cook it yourself.

Go and see the bogmen in the museum.

Go to the National Art Gallery.

Take a trip to Irelands Eye.

Do the hop on hop off bus trip.

    Do the Viking spash tour.

    Do the 1916 tour.

    Do the Guinness hops tour.

I think there is a good whisky tour in Smithfield.
