Ok, I know this would probably be more suited to the music forum, but there's only 3 people in there. Basically I have a guitar for quite a while now but apart from just messing around and making noise, I haven't done much with it yet. I'm going to start learning it in earnest over the next few weeks, and I have gotten some info online, but I was wondering if anyone has an hints, tips, advice or words of wisdom they can offer me.
    Thanks

Post in the music techniques forum, and read what's already there.

Apart from it being against the charter to use After Hours just to get an audience, you won't get the same response here as you would there.

Now, since this is almost certainly going to get lobbed over there anyway, you have to be more specific in what you're trying to play. As a general rule, do loads of chromatic finger exercises and play loads of scales, learn what the scales are and where they are all over the neck. Learn every note on the fretboard. Practise your rhythm skills by tapping along to anything you hear, alternate pick everything to develop both picking and rhythm, learn how to form chords in all positions and how to move between them fast. Listen to piles and piles of music and play along with as much as possible. Even if you're just playing the most simplistic phrases alongside stuff, it's still developing musicality. Buy a metronome and play along to it all the time.

Now, those being the rudimentary basics, others can add stuff.

Learn by ear at that stage tbh.

    Play more.

Tabs are your friend, but not your best friend.

Learn the chords and scales to understand what you're doing.

Get a few lessons to point u in the right direction.

    Play more.

PRACTICE UNTIL YOUR FIGERS BLEED, THEN WHEN THEY DO, WIPE EM OFF AND THEN PRACTICE MORE.

Try starting with the G, D, A and C chords, you can play loads in those chords Keep persisting, it'l be tricky at the start but you'll be flying after a while p.s. purchase a capo as well.

Im a self taught player. the best quick advice i can say is to keep practising till your fingers fall off. The first 6 months are the toughest.

If you ever need a moral boost to assess how much you have actually come on, just flip the guitar around and try play it with your other hand!

Avoid become a slave to tab, it will ruin you.

learn scales, play them for 10 hours a day gradually building up speed. Keep playing for 10 hours a day speeding up everyday and set records which you can beat. Then learn arpeggios. Follow the same routine. Shred until your fingers bleed. Then shred even more until you go into warp speed. Shred if your life depended on it. Once you have mastered the ways of shred you will be a shred master.

3 people in Music and 18 in Instruments so they go to AH.

Tips on how to play guitar.
    Place finger against string.
    Pluck string.
Keep moving finger until required note is found.

Get a book that says 'How to play <insert band here> songs with easy chords'. Make sure the band is one that you really like so you will be motivated to practice. After that its just practice, practice, practice. You will be crap for about 2-3 months, but then you will see improvements. Good luck.

OP: Post for traffic again and I'll ban you. Read the charter before posting in AH again.
