    (10 + 2y)2 =

    (10 + 2y) * (10 + 2y) =

    100 + 20y + 20y + 4y2 =

    100 + 40y + 4y2

    it looks like you multiply the bracket by itself IE.
    (10+2y)(10+2y)

    Can someone here explain the Newton-Raphson Method? Driving me mad!
    The question is; Take x1=4 as the first approximation of a real root of x^(3)-4x^(2)-5=0

    Find using the Newton-Raphson Method, x2, the second approximation.

    You have f(x). You sub in 4 to get f(x_1).

    You differentiate f(x) to get f'(x). You sub in 4 to get f'(x_1).

    You use the formula

    450bac44dc3e19e718bd2aa922f3d9ba.png, with x_1 instead of x_n and x_2 instead of x_[n+1] and you're done.
