If you're attacked by zombies and bitten, thus turning into a zombie eventually. Does the person "die" and float off to heaven (or whatever you believe in) and the body takes control of itself and wanders around looking for flesh OR does the person realise they are a zombie and have greaty decreased brain activity, thus the only thing they know how to do is walk, groan, look for flesh ?

When a person gets infected they're gone, man. Thats not your girl anymore.

Indeed, you must be aware that the person is gone and it is only a Zombie now.

If you hold back in putting a bullet in the head of a loved one you're a risk to us all!

I realise the person you knew would be gone as such, but are they still aware of what their doing ? They'd be nothing like we knew them, now their just flesh eating monsters, but would they know that ?

Anyone get what I'm saying ?

Yep, I get it. I think that nothing of the former person would remain. They'd be running on pure instinct to feed and unaware of anything else around them.

That's why they walk into chopper rotors and the like.

I think that residual chemical/ electrical signals in the brain may cause the zombie in question to perhaps behave in similar ways to the person they were, but it is only vestigial- Perhaps they would be even more likely to eat your brain.

I wouldnt even think they have thoughts of any kind. The brain effectivly becomes another internal organ, only focussed on food (mmm, BBBBBBBBBRRRRRRRRRRRAAAAAAAAAIIIIIIIINNNNNNNNNSSSSSSS). So no, they are gone. Shoot that bitch in the head and move on.
