advice needed - speakers and power amp

I've never heard a good word about the JBL JRX stuff at all.

I would imagine it'll do up to a point.

I would always tell anyone planning on playing dance music to invest in a sub. Let the sub do all the pushing and the tops set too cruise.

Whats your budget? Would you be likely to add speakers on as you go on?

I blew up a 15" JBL sub in my van only after a couple of months of getting it. No come back
They seem to be more synonymous with car audio and boy racers than with discos and PA. You would probably find the exact same amp and speakers badged under another brand in budget places like Maplin. JBL also make some top end stuff. As Unclebill said it would lack the thump needed in dance.

My first rig was a Carlsboro Headliner set, bins and tops I got for 800 Quid SH along with a Bose 800 poweramp (Since Deceased). Alott of people bitch about Carlsboro speakers and say they are only good for show bands but I don't have a bad word about them. I still have the speakers as back up or can link them if I need a bigger set up

You can also check out the musicstore in Germany, taking postage into consideration they are far cheaper than anywhere in Ireland and have a huge selection and are very quick service. They also do a budget Peavey range. Other than that it might be worth while getting secondhand from someone up grading.

It really takes alot to blow a sub :D

I'm using JBL MRX/VRX stuff. Great gear. Carlsboro would be old school gear. Very robust, but not exactly know for quality.

I would look into getting a sub for any DJ setup. Or if you don't get the sub at the start the remember the 12" tops mean a 15" Sub. 15" tops will mean a 18" sub. So bear that in mind for later additions.

Also, transport of your subs. The lightest passive 15" sub on the market is 25kg, going all the way up to 40kg. 18" subs are anywhere from 35kg-60kg. Active subs you can add anything from 5-10kg on top of it. So they are not easy to cart around unless you have a van.

But they are worth it for that killer dance floor low end :D

sorry to hijack but if I ordered a wireless mic from these guys today would it be delivered before saturday week? I'm getting married then and need it for the marquee. Left my own one in a hotel in galway and when I went to get it collected from lost property someone else had nicked it! Otherwise any bricks and mortar recommendations in Dublin?

I have changed the cones in both the bins and tops in my carlsboro to quality stuff and kept both tops & bins at 4 ohms, they are very decieving, the cabinits are robust like any of the Marshal stuff.

Alternitivly he could go for full range speakers. I have used the Peavey DJS4 for a few years at parties and there is plenty of thump out of them, they also have wheels on the base and will fit in most hatch backs with the seats down.

Definitally a hatch back or small van for subs and tops and also a hand cart would not go astray.

You should have it by then, I never had a problem with them, they use the main couriers. You can also contact them for a track & trace number and ask then when it will be dispatched. They have Irish reps and sie sprechen Englisch

    My god in heaven

Ironic that people knock a top speaker manufacturer's bottom line range but yet are so quick to recommend Carlsbro, Peavey and even Maplin's offerings.

Blowing a Sub is usually down to user error, blaming the speaker is like blaming a car when you crash it into a tree from falling asleep at the wheel.

Anyway my advice to the OP, get lightweight Tops and a half decent Sub, no point cheapening out of the purchase to get a backbreaking rig that can't be lifted by human hands.

it would just be for indie(for want of a better word) and older music...no dance or complicated mixing going on

I would treat much of the Peavey and Carlsboro range as the Ford Transit of PA, not exactly the highest preformance but great work horses and value for money. I did mention JBL make top end stuff. As for Maplin

I had two subs working from the same amp, one a Kenwood the other the JBL. the JBL lasted 6 months and the other one is still going after I moved it on. Both were 500W.

Did you get them from a guy in Dunlaoghaire? I bought mine from a guy in Ennis with a rig which I just wanted the amp, lights, and CD Changer was going to move on the speakers but was impressed with them hung on to them. I thought I blew them last year and had them lying up for several months until I discovered it was a just blown cross over i.e 30 Quid. Ill be using them this weekend.

If you could get a decent speaker that will act as a full range (top when subs added) ie when you can afford them at a later stage. I would personally avoid any Maplin stuff unless I want to equip the bedroom.

Yeah I always get those Peavy's they are brilliant full range ones. Haven't had any parties in a long time though so not sure if he is still around.

I've never come across a Subwoofer that can blow itself up without some outside help. More often than not, the operator either pushes the amp too far or else just sends a clipped signal all night long.

Even the best speakers on the planet will blow eventually if you're hardlining them more than they would like. It's an inevitability tbh.

One can blow a set of speakers by using an underpowered or poor quality amp. My brother has a set of Monitor Audio household speakers, the equivilant to B&O in price and quality. Had a mad rave party and used them with decks, He blew 4 cones with replacement value of about 1200 Quid STG, The speakers were less than a year old and he claimed warrenty, on the questionaire he had to specify the equipment and output driving the speakers, also the music he was playing which he specified as jazz. The reluctantly repaired the speakers FOC. I wouldn't see this service with much of the car audio stuff sold.
