Help,PS3 wont read disk

My friend's PS3 40G wont read any disks after he upgraded the System Software,everytime insert the disk,the little circle appears at the top corner.but wont go to games or movies
tried format the HD,still not working,anyone able to help here?

Try a system restore. I wipes everything including the flash memory and restores PS3 back to factory settings.
You will have to download the FW update again afterwards.

ok,i will give it a try,was quick formating the HD and restore to factory setting,still the same.
This time i am going to use the complete format

Looks like the laser (and maybe mechanism) is screwed. Sony will fix it for free if you have a warranty (and reciept). If not, for a mere 250euro they will give you a refurbished one.


I have heard of a guy who fixes them for 80euro. Am checking it out now - I might end up replacing it myself, from what I see online a new laser and mechanism will cost about 60euro, and it should take 15-20mins to install. If I can get it done for 80euro without having to wait long i probably will, other than that I'll just mail order one!

Too Bad,after 2hrs long formating,still not reading disk.
dont know what to do now,dont have receipt as it was a present
Does PS3 has serial number like Xbox360 to check if its still under warranty?

Try running a DVD lens cleaner through it.

someone told me to swap 2 disk into drive 20 times. said it worked for him,but no luck to me.

lens cleaner might help but i doubt it.

for me and others with this problem, the ps3 cant even spin discs anymore.

weichen: check if your ps3 is spinning the discs you put in it - put the disk in, and after a few seconds eject it - see if it has been rotated or not...

anyone know how the sony warranty work? is it based on receipt only or there is a serial number?

From reading about this problem online, I've seen some people say that your warranty is invalid if you do not have both reciept AND serial number.

In the warranty terms and conditions for the PS3 there is a condition that states that you only have a warranty if you have the reciept. I don't recall it's wording but I saw it being quoted.

thats too bad, what if people recieved PS3 as present,i dont think you will give receipt with the present.

A s long as you have a receipt your sorted. The receipt is your warranty,or so I was told when I bought mine.

just checked. ps3 isnot spinning the discs.. so guess all i can do is call sony spend 250 to get this 6 months old PS3 replaced?
or buy a Laser from Ebay try to get someone fit it for me?

I got mine fixed at the console repair shop in bray...works fine now.... 85euro, fixed on the spot.
