My father got an iPod nano about a year ago and uses it a lot. Easy enough to use, so much so that my mother got one too!

It's the "second generation" one described here:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/IPod_nano which aren't available new any more, but I'm sure the new 3rd generation ones are just as good. 4GB or 8GB should be plenty, especially for podcast stuff.

If the podcasts are available through iTunes, as most seem to be, it makes it even easier to download new ones and send to your iPod.

I used to have a Creative Zen three or four years ago, the software provided by Creative for updating it with new songs was very cumbersome, I'd definately recommend an iPod over it. (I can't speak for the newer Zens though)
