Karate in South City Center

    Hi guys,

I'm a 23 yr old girl and I just moved to Dublin (Harold's Cross).

I'd like to find a Karate class (Shotokan I think) somewhere near me. I work just beside Harcourt Street so really anywhere city center (south of the river), Rathmines, etc. would be reasonable.

I'm not very fit, but have been getting fitter over the last few months with some weights in the gym combined with some running training for the mini-marathon. I'd like something that would push me without being cruel. Ideally I'd like a mixed class (ability and gender).

Anyone know anything local? Also price ranges (fixed fee per class / monthly membership / etc)?

    Thanks,
    Fio

Here are a couple of clubs I know of. Not sure if any of them are near you but take a look:

    http://www.karateireland.com/stvincents/

    http://www.karatedublin.com/

I've gone to a few tournaments in Dublin and there seem to be loads of clubs around. Try the colleges, UCD, Trinity, DCU, DIT etc all have strong clubs and I don't think you have to be student to train (only to compete).

Or try this site. ONAKAI are a governing body for karate in Ireland:

    http://www.onakai.org/gpage3.html

and I remember the WSKF crowd have a strong squad:

    http://www.wskfireland.net/

    Also the JKS:

Hope there's something in there that will help!

There is a Shotokan Karate club in Rathgar which trains 3 times a week. It's a small club so there's lots of personal attention for students. The style is very traditional, not for competitions.

    Find it here: http://www.tandenshotokan.com/

Classes are paid for by month / quarter / year.

    Good Luck !

I know you said "Karate" but there's Bujinkan Budo Taijutsu near you in Kennilworth Lane with a beginners course starting on July 14th - see www.happobiken.com or there's my dojo in the Liberties... www.bujinkanjiyu.com and we're taking beginners too. There's mixed age, gender, skills in each. We study all weapons, strikes, throws, locks, armed and unarmed, single and multiple opponents. No competitions. Perfect for women.

Aight Fio (you may know me better as a Sick Hoe)

I can personally recommend the JKS club in Ranelagh (www.thejks.com) - Scott is one of the best instructors in europe, never mind Ireland.

Shotokan club in RCSI afaik, which isn't very far from Harcourt St, not sure if it runs over the summer, but I'll check it out!
