    Hey all,
I'm looking to buy a HDTV for the PS3. I have a €2,000 Budget and no size limits though would prefer not to go bigger than 50". As far as brands go I prefer Sony but am not really pushed.

    Thanks for the help.

Why Sony? Sony are playing catch up when it comes to flat screens , and they are nowhere near as good as similar priced competition.

With a budget of 2000 Panasonic are the ones to be looking at , They are by far the best out there at the moment and pretty much cant be beat.

I get to compare a lot of Flat screens , I would rate them in the following order by brand ,

Pioneer , excellent , Top of the tree , but also the most expensive , in the region of 4-5000 euro.

Panasonic , very close runner up to Pioneer and way more affordable.

Samsung , the latest models " L6's" coming very close to some of the Panasonic sets.

Sony are very hit and miss , but never get above average on any of the sets when compared to the Panasonics. You also get a lot of trashy interpolation technology on their sets , which in itself is a pretty good indicator of dressing up bad technology , good sets dont need them.

I just got a Samsung 5 series 40 inch and it's great, I played PS3 in HD last night for the first time and thought it was amzing, so the 6 series would be pretty sweet.

Remember to get your HD cable, bought mine on ebay, saved a good bit on that.

@mathias: I've always like Sony. I grew up with their brand name but as I said will go with other brands if shown a good tv and price.

I shall definitely take a look at Panasonic at your suggestion. Any specs I should look for in particular (asside from the 1920 x 1080 resolution)?

I'd recommend a samsung. Sony are behind the pack now.

Avoid this year's batch of panasonics - they don't do the proper hi-def stuff right, they flicker when running at 24fps in 1080p. Panasonic said next year's models won't have the problem.

Samsungs really stand out and seem to get great reviews consistently!icon14.gif

If your in Dublin and want to see Panasonics in action , try Alliance Electric on Georges st. Mentioning boards to them usually results in a small discount as well !

Thats last years news ( 7X series not 8 x series ) and is more a mis read of specs than an actual problem with the sets ,i.e. a confusion in the manual about whether a set claimed to be able to do the job or not , all of the current sets Ive seen play blu ray 24fps as smooth as silk from a PS3.

I'd rate them over Samsung any day. Samsung are quite good though , and to be clear Im talking the latest models , as some of the earlier ones were not great.

Ah ok. I thought this was still a problem though. The sets ran at 60Hz and therefore did a nice job of 20fps video but would get messy with 24fps (which should run at 72Hz). Maybe i'm wrong about this years models - I don't have a panasonic, but it's probably good to check to be safe! As far as I know a 720p 24fps bluray would look perfect on them, it's just the combination of 1080p and 24fps would cause some flicker.

I saw some of the panasonics on display in shops and they do look slick! Dunno if the shops were running them at full hd or not tho!

1080p 24fps is the holy grail of home movies , as it reproduces the framerate of a movie in the cinema.

Its a relatively new feature on flatscreens and last year not all sets could do this , they ran at the mains frequencey of whatever country they were intended for , so in the states your talking 50hz , here your talking 60 hz.

If you take a set that is not capable of 1080p 24fps and feed it a 24fps signal it will judder or will not show it at all.
Its important to note that this is not a fault of the set , most sets last year could not do this. Only rather expensive top of the range sets.

The problem with panasonic was not that the sets were faulty in any way , but rather that the manuals for some sets claimed they could do this and they couldnt , the manuals were misprinted , and Panasonic had to clarify which sets could and which could not , which they were very slow to do.

This year almost every new set worth its salt can do 1080p 24.

There , I hope that clears it up .

    just bought a samsung 40A656 lcd... 40" of pure glory. 50,000:1 contrast, 1080p, 100hz.

€1450 in currys. not sure about elsewhere. there's a 46" version which fits in under your 50" limit nicely. the tv itself is shiny with a hint of a wine colour (remote is the same colour).

actually bought this yesterday, it quite simply puts any tv to shame bar it's 50 inch bigger brother.

was watching casino royale (got it free with ps3) on it last night in a beautiful 1080p. it was simply stunning parkour scene for the win.

playing GTA IV on it all day today, and it's ****ing brilliant even though it's not in 1080p, i can actually read the mobile phone text, and the radio station logos are so much more crisper.

i played GT5:Prologue on it and i was this || close to pissing myself.

I picked up the Samsung 52" A656 a few weeks ago, and I can honestly say I've never made a better purchase! The set is just outstanding, and Blu-Rays and games from the PS3 will phsically make your jaw drop. It has all the usual bells and whistles (100Hz, 1080p/24, 50,000:1 contrast etc), and looks gorgeous even when switched off!

I got mine from Sams Yer Man, details are here: (enter their "Free Prize Draw" on the right of the screen to be emailed a 5% discount code :D)
