Touching up with aerosol

Anyone got some helpful tips on spraying with an Aerosol & blending it in to the existing paint. I need to repair the rear wheel arch properly on my 1985 MK1 MR2 at a later date. I have the repair panel which I will need to weld in next winter but for now I need to put it thru’ the NCT & get some driving in for the summer. I have removed the rust bubbles, filled, sanded, sprayed with filler primer & sanded again. It’s now ready for spraying. It would be better to spray it properly but for now, this will have to do. I have an aerosol of paint which is a close match. I will mask off most of the wing except for an area of about 3 inches around the arch. Any tips in avoiding the straight line from the masking tape or blending it in would be appreciated. The paint will never be a complete match but it should look better than the rust bubbles. Should I use a clear lacquer afterwards. The colour is red by the way.

    Thanks,

    T.

Did you use an etch primer before the filler primer ? This is the best type to use over bare metal, BTW primer is not water proof so if the car has been out in the weather at all you'd better ensure it is adequately dry.

Generally for DIY I mask off all the surrounding bodywork, throw asheet over the car, as its amazing how overspray can get from one corner of the car to another. Then mask off the area as normal but I use a wide masking tape closer to the area being painted and double it back over on itself in as wide an arc as I can. This gives a softer edge, no hard lines and its easier to blend in.

You will need to flatten off the surrounding paintwork to allow the new red paint to adhere, and then flatten a wider area if you are going to apply a clearcoat.

Check out some posts by "volvoboy" who does spraying for a living and have written some goods tips on the various steps.

    Good luck !

to avoid the edge by the masking tape I think you should not spray up to it but only near to it, getting less paint gradually on as you approach it......and then flat it off ....thats what Im going to do anyway....:D

Can you get aerosols made up? In particular in Ford olympic blue?

I am going to do the arches on the Capri sometime soon, but don't plan on investing in a respray for another while until everything is spot on.

Thanks for the replies.I didn't get the aeorsol made up. Just went to the local motor factors & they matched my paint code to an aerosol code. Will give it a go.

Corktina - do you plan to flatten the paint with 1000 water paper. Bet I'll make a mess but I can't justify spending money on it at the moment. It should still look better than the rust - hopefully.

    Will check Volvoboy's postings

......yes you can get them made up in Halfords or better still Vinny Byrnes. They can do it by colour code on the car or if you give them a petrol flap or wing nut or some other part of the body.

Halford's in Cork aren't bad at €15.99 - no probs getting a decent match on '58 and '71 VW colours for me. ;)
