Driving Range where you can hit off the deck.

    Hi there.

Is there a driving range open to the public in the south Dublin/Wicklow area where you can actually play off grass? Something like the practice areas you see the pro's warm up on before and after a tournament?

I really need to work on my irons and I've found that banging them off those rubber tees or the artificial grass at a standard driving range doesn't tell me much. I've a tendency to come in steep sometimes and the club just bounces off the artificial surface and comes out half decent, whereas on a grass surface I'd catch it heavy and it would go nowhere. I'd be willing to pay top dolla if necessary for an hour or so at a range or practice area where you can hit balls off the deck. My own golf club/course doesn't have a practice area worth mentioning.
    Any suggestions?

I don't know of any. All I can suggest is that you focus on the strike.......if the club hits the mat before the ball then you are hitting it heavy. As you said the shot may look reasonable but you know it was a poor strike. So your feedback needs to move from the ball flight to the strike........forget where the ball goes and "feel" the strike.

Carton House (Maynooth) has grass teeing areas. Very good spot.

Spawell driving range have about 10 bays outside on the grass to the left. Not covered obviously, so no good if its raining!

Excellent. I will give that a go as it's close by. Thanks for the replies.

I joined the short game area last w/end.. Such a quality setup with lovely hitting areas and amazing short game facilities.

Apart from that Spawell have outdoor hitting bays as you walk left when leaving the lobby

The setup is first class. Could easily spend hours and hours up there. As a non-member it is reasonably expensive but at least the facilities are quality.

I paid €100 for as much access as I can handle on the short game area.

I joined City West after 4 or 5 years without playing and picked everything back up pretty quick apart from my pitching which has become a disgrace. Took lessons etc and need at least a couple of hard weeks work on my pitching to get it anywhere near where I wanted it so decided to join.

The facilities are top notch and I really wish that had of been there 5 years ago as I was living in Maynooth at the time and stopped playing as I had no where to practise as couldnt afford to join a club new club after leaving home

Unfortunately the driving range is for Members only or if you have a teetime at the course.

I should clarify - this is in relation to the driving range in Charlesland.

Over what timespan is that? Is it €100 for a month?

The €100 rate is for members only though - so you would have to join for 12 months (150 lids) and then pay 100 lids for short game.

Well worth it if you are going to be there a lot.

I am not a member of the Academy but got the short game area deal for €100, I think it's a great deal for me as I want/need to do allot of work on my short game and don't have the facilities to do it at City West.

For BarrierReef the short game area is down the back right, You have to follow the path around and you will see the greens.

Do they accept all kinds of lids or just certain ones? Bin lids? Yoghurt pot lids? eye lids?

That range looks like it needs a bit of a refurb.
