Problems formatting and reinstalling XP on a HP laptop

    Hey,

I'm trying to fix a laptop for a mate. Basically when windows boots a BSOD comes up and reboots before having a chance to even see what it says.
I tried booting from XP disc and trying chkdsk and chkdsk /r at the recovery console but got a "unrecoverable errors found" or somthing along those lines error (it never even came up with a progress indicator, just flashed that error almost instantly) so I figured the hard drive might be dead.

I also tried FIXBOOT which claimed to have fixed it but it now boots up with a simple "NTLDR not found, press a key to restart" message so he gave me the go ahead to wipe everything and reinstall XP from scratch.

When it asks me which way to format it (NTFS or FAT) it stays on 0% on both for a long time so I tried again except chose NTFS (Quick) which seemed to work and started installing windows. When it gets to 99% the setup gives me a "Setup cannot copy the file: *insert name here*" with the files pci.sys, intelide.sys and acpi.sys (and then a small bunch of other files like usbport.sys, usbuhci.sys , kbdclass.sys and various others) not installing so i skip them and upon bootup just gives me the usual "NTLDR not found" error.

Is there any hope for this or is the hard drive just dead? Its a pretty shabby lookin old thing so i wouldnt be surprised if its given up

    Thanks

Flogging a dead hard drive isnt going to make it work....buy a new one they don't cost the earth. You answered your own question really with the description you gave!.

ah right, its just that i've never actually come across a dead hard drive so not definite what the symptoms were and i wont be buyin a new one as its not my laptop, just tryin to fix it for a mate!

tbh i'll prolly recommend he gets a new laptop anyway. i looked on the bottom and it has a windows 98 product key so i think its prolly about time he got a new one anyway!
