Does anyone else find that uploading stuff to iDisk is incredibly slow and painful or is it just me?

I'm trying to upload a video file of about 100 MB and it's unusably slow. This is my experience both at home and at work - two different providers.

    Any advice?

    Hugh

[edit] shoulda said I'm a .Mac member and have loads of free space on my iDisk.

    yeah same here.

it is just like the Gallery (part of iLife 08) -- Americans have fantastic speeds uploading photos and videos to the Gallery, but Europeans have to put with painfully slow speeds. Apple say they can't figure out why this is so.

Also When i watch Steve Jobs keynotes i go to youtube cause it is way faster to watch it there. Waiting for the video to load up on the Apple site is painfully slow. I pointed this out to Apple when i send them feedback on iLife 08. I said, you can't figure out why your speeds are slow in europe, maybe it is your fault, youtube is fast.

I think the idisk slowness could be an Apple problem, just like the photo gallery.

I got sick of waiting for them to fix it, and my website is now hosted with Blacknight.

It is painfully slow... They need to sort it out bigtime. Has anyone tried the skydrive service from microsoft?? 5gb online storage n its free, its web based so u can use it on the mac. Had a looks at it there, 50mb file limit for uploads n u can only select one file at a time.... Still, its a start n its free and I'm sure its faster than .mac

    :)

I forget every year how crap .Mac is for serving files/image/videos. Somebody kick me next May before I renew.

Try Cyberduck (free) or Transmit (not free). These seem to be faster and also show a proper progress bar unlike the annoying lack of one when using your idisk from the finder. Other than that and a few other small things iDisk is a handy facility.

And of course an adsl connection doesn't help matters either.

Thanks for the tip. I own Transit, I'll give it a whirl ...

I agree iDisk is very handy, i use it, but for small files. I would love to use it to its maximum. And i would, if Apple allowed it. Maybe some day.

OK so I tried Simon201's suggestion and it seems to work better than doing a Finder copy - I used Transmit.

Apparently what happens when you're doing a Finder copy is that it caches the files locally (quick) and then uploads it (slow). The Finder can't estimate for some reason how long it's going to take so it just sits there and says something useless like "Closing file, please wait ..." On the other hand, Transmit does have an accurate estimatin o how long it's going to take.

Having said that, even with Transmit, the internet network access for other programs seems to grind to a halt

Anyway, there's a bunch of stuff here about it on info.apple.

    Hugh
