Sound System upgrade for HTPC

Is getting a soundcard and sound system that can take an optical audio cable for surround sound my best option?

I am tempted by those all-in-one "home theater in a box" kits that I have now, which come with speakers and a DVD Player.

    Should I not by those?

I now understand that the biggest problem with them/ my technics set is that they do not give you a true receiver. Instead, they take the surround sound decoder and shove it inside a DVD player.Which is great for watching dvds with the dvd player as it'll play DVDs in surround sound. But the decoder has no other inputs. So my HTPC and PS3 wont see the benefits,

I dont know what to buy now and the tv is only a few weeks old ( need something ) :o

The logitech Z-5500 has plenty of inputs and would be a great starter for you , it has digital co-ax , digital optical , and PC analog inputs.

Its quite powerful and will give you all that you have listed. Its well worth considering. It will certainly be a big step up from the Technics and there are plenty of people using it as a home cinema package. The Sub is huge by the way.

You wont need that soundcard if you get the logitechs by the way, as the logitech can give you great sound from what you already have on the PC.
And in any case its too expensive for card with no optical out , you would be much better off going for a Terratech or an Auzen if you were going for a standalone soundcard, both of those have proper digital outs , not the pathetic versions and hobbled drivers Creative have.
