iPhone & roaming: preventing data usage

    Hi,

I have an unlocked iPhone. Email is set to only check when I open the mail program.

I was wondering is there ever any behind the scenes data loading by the iPhone, which would cost you an arm and a leg abroad?

I know they can check for emails when it looks like they are off, but I have it set to manual for checking email. Some people (on prepay I think) had problems with their unlocked iPhones sending tonnes of SMS's for some reason.

Is this a problem to watch out for abroad? I do not intend to load data via the cellular network except in an emergency.

There is a setting in the configuration screen that disables data when roaming.

If you are not checking your emails automatically, is there much data 'chatter' from the iPhone and if so, why?

On a stock iPhone with not many apps installed, without checking mail (from just looking at the usage stats in about>usage) I never notice an increase in the number of KB transmitted, so I'd speculate to say very little / none.

With some third party apps that use edge this might increase.

You could use bossprefs to turn edge off that way you will not get any unexpected data charges

with out checking email if you use maps, weather, stocks or of course safari then you will be using edge if you are outside of wifi coverage or if your wifi connection drops out.
The same would go for installer ( actually installing and refreshing sources) and anything else you have installed that needs a data connection

I was thinking more of ways the iPhone loads data behind the scenes, if there are any.

I heard of Yanks who thought the iPhone being OFF meant no data got loaded, but got big bills on arriving home because it was checking mails.

Some people on the unlock thread had a problem with spurious SMS messages.
