I recieved this email today from a guy who wishes to advertise on our site:::

    "hi
    my name is Peter

i would like to advertise my online casino
    at your website :irishdeafpoker.com
please send me an offer for 1 index page link / box of text with link
on the index page of your site

And of course if you would like to conduct link exchange
    i have pr1-pr gambling/poker/slots ect sites

and also pricing for text links and banners
please reply to my email : stevans.peter@gmail.com
    thank you
And have a good Day :)

    Peter"

My poker society launched our website a few months ago but I never really thought of our website as a marketing tool. But this email has got me thinking that we might as well utilise the opportunities available to us. I have no experience in giving quotes for this kind of stuff so I m hoping someone like carfax, 4ofakind etc who has banners & the likes on their website would be able to reply or PM me and give me an idea of what would be a fair price to quote??

**mods if this is inappropiate for this forum, please delete and accept my apologies!**

You should google 'Peter Stevans' and 'scam', just to see if anyone with that rather strange name has been involved in any dodgy selling of photography equipment on auction sites.

It obviously could be a different person of course.

I suppose it would all depend on the amount of traffic that your site has.

Also I think you would have to find out what site he wants to advertise.
Its not stated in your post.

Is it a site that you are happy to allow yourself to be associated with?
Find out if it is indeed a PR1 site, it could well be someone who has a rubbish site and he may just redirect all those who visit.

If you are happy with all the details and feel it is genuine then maybe you will at least get your hosting and registration paid for the year.

Hope this is of some help

    Also maybe ask in here

it really depends how much traffic you are getting, is your site a 2+2 or more of an antesup?

Assuming you get a few hundred to a few thousand unique visitor a year and they are mostly gamblers, I'd ask for $800/year and settle for $400 in return for pride of place on your front page/every page.

edit: I suspect this is a bit over the odds (don't really know) but he seems interested and you weren't planning on selling it at all.

I've had various advertising agencies approach me with offers but have turned them all down because you have the opportunity to earn much more money by becoming an affiliate with a gambling site and you'll find you'll get a lot of assistance from affiliate managers who will tailor the offerings to your target demographic.

Most sites offer one of two methods of compensating affiliates; either cost per acquisition (CPA) which is a one off payment for every player who sets up a real money account usually in the region of $30-100. Secondly there's revenue sharing where you get a % of the rake generated by each player.

CPA people will give you $115 - $150 if you press them I have found. I don't know what their cut is when a player signs up.

2+2 charge around $70 for 10k imprints of a banner add on some of their forums. I would of course ask for much more that that if your site has a small amount of traffic.

Dont think I'll reply to the inital email, for some reason my gut instinct says he's dodgy. Really appreciate your help and tips though, I think we may look into the opportunities of banners etc.. Again, many thanks, esp Murderer's.

I agree with what RoundTower is saying. If he is genuinely interested in advertising on your site then get him to ring you personally and talk something out.
He probably is 100% genuine but I can see how your cautious over it.

Best thing to do is email him and ask him to ring you and belt something out then. For a years advertising on your site you should get at lease a few hundred bucks for it.

Do you update the website yourself by the way? Its a very neat and tidy one. Nice job.
