What is the best video converter that people have found for mac? Of course, i'v done the googling and i got loads of results, but to be honest, im a little wary about downloading freeware that i just stumbled across.

So what could you guys suggest? Its for converting some .VOB files i get from friends etc, and then the usual DivX and all that??

    Any advice greatly appreciated.

    Cheers

I like Handbrake, not sure about DIVX converting though although I'd imagine it does. The pay for Visual Hub is the best mac video converter imo.

Yep, VisualHub is definitely one of the best out there but it is not free. If you only really want to convert vids for an iPod, etc, then the guys who do VisualHub also do iSquint which is quite good as well and is free, just not as fully featured as VisualHub.

Handbrake is only good for ripping DVDs.

VisualHub is the best for converting one file format to another, but as was said, it's not free. FfmpegX is a free alternative, but it's not particularly user-friendly.

+ 1 for ffmpegX, very powerful *nix based but with a GUI, not the easiest to use but works a treat once you figure out and best of all it's free. VisualHub is excellent but again it's pay for - which I've paid for also. Handbrake, mac the ripper, VLC from videolan and mplayerX, mencoder etc are a few other tools you need in your closet.

I bought VisualHub there a few weeks ago, it's really really good.. very fast even on my little Mac Mini.

Yep, thanks guys. I already have handbrake and love it. Just downloaded iSquint and it worked for the files i wanted. Fairly quick too, considering it was converting a full movie.

    Cheers again guys

+1 for iSquint for anyone else reading this. And OP, for the record you can be sure (well, 99% sure) you're getting a non-dodgy download if you use Versiontracker.com or Macupdate.com.

iSquint is definitely the business. It usually manages to Decrease file size
even on "go nuts" quality setting. The apps got a sense of humor too.

+1 for iSquint, unless you're gonna buy Visual Hub - which for 15 euro is well worth it.
