    http://www.ucc.ie/en/CurrentStudents/ClubsSocietiesandSports/

DJ soc have people who are specialised in rap/hip hop
Yep! The list above doens't have it but UCC have Net Soc, they have bebo page somewhere, they do counter strike tournaments and such, and half my friends (and myself!) are WoW addicts to plenty around to talk to about it :D
    Boxing yep
    Black people: yep
Night life: we have two bars, the union run lots of clubs in town and a night bus
Hot girls...well I'm leaving this year but yeah :P
People are generally really friendly, you get to known SO many people during a degree.
Of course we have craic! :D It's Cork, boy! :p
A relaxing first year depends on your course! Had friends in Arts who spent their first year half drunk (yes, generalisation, depends on modules) I did Science and was more stressed in first year than any other year.

Yes to pretty much all of the above. I think there is a Hip-Hop dance club, if you want to discuss Hip-Hop then no need to look any further then ieBoards. ;)

Damn, im going there next year but I booked campus accomodation so im sure I'll be blocked from online gaming.

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,226 ✭✭✭taram

Yep, more than likely yeah :( We used to have a good gaming cafe in town but it shut down recently, we've a few others but they're not so good :P

Hopefully you'll make other gaming friends quick who have broadband in their homes :D

Well haven't been there in 2 years, but at the time it was bad for lag and overcrowded. What's it like now?

You may also like the Wargaming and Roleplaying Society (WARPS). There's a fair few WoW and CS players in it and they do pen and paper roleplaying, figurine based wargames (think Warhammer 40K etc) and so on.

And if you, after admitting that you're a CS kiddie, say that sounds too nerdy, lol is all I can say. :p

I'm from Dublin, would moving to Cork be to much of a shock? i've been a few times, but obviosuly its not the same as living there.

Yes, in that it's a lot smaller and because of this has fewer pubs, clubs, restaurants etc. This is something that will either bother you or it won't. There is plenty to do but you don't have the very wide variety of choice that you have in Dublin. On the other hand, you don't have the sprawl, crowds or prices of Dublin either, so there are benefits.

places to stay, do UCC have their on residency on campus, or should i be looking at other student places, like Victoria Place, The Village?

Castlewhite is practically on campus, but none of the main ones (Brookfield, Victoria Place etc) are more than a ten/fifteen minute walk away.

easy to get around? i'm spoilt in Dublin with the Luas, dart and a good few busses, whats its like in Cork city?

Public transport is of a far lower level than Dublin. On the other hand it's a much smaller city so walking everywhere is actually not that bad. It's a ten minute walk (if that) from UCC to the city centre for instance and the city centre isn't very big either compared to Dublin. If you're out in the suburbs it's a bit of a bitch but if you're a student and staying near UCC you're already in the city centre almost and don't need to worry about transport very much.

WoW RP and real life gaming RP are really different :P But you know I'm on an RP server so hehe, I'm biased!

Your going to have a hard time finding accomodation at this stage, all campus accomodation is fully booked for months (castlewhite, victoria lodge and university hall though either way that place isn't available to 1st years), as well as that most other places seem to be booked aswel.

And i'm sure you wouldnt want to get a house for 1st year so i'd try and get a cancelation at victoria lodge or somewere.
    Anyone agree?

I shared a house for my first year many years ago. It went ok. Being near campus would have been nicer but it wasn't too hard to find my way from Bishopstown to campus and back.

Though walking home from the city centre at night was a bit of a pain.

Hi. I was just wondering could anyone tell me around when in June should results for the first year arts exams be published? Just wondering because I will be away during the month of June. Also are they published on the UCC site or are they posted? Thanks. :):)

I'm just wondering about UCC accommodation for 09/10 academic year. Has anyone stayed at University Hall before? I went to UCC for my undergrad, but that was over 5 years ago. I'm going back now to do a post-grad and I'm thinking of staying in dorms just for the convenience. Would appreciate any info/feedback I could get... :)

Hey guys, so i'm filling out my cao, want to study nutrition, but I'm so stuck between ucc and ucd. while ucd is just around 1 hour away from me (im from Kildare), i kind of like the idea of the smaller university/city experience and think it might be a more enjoyable experience. But would I be stupid to go so far to ucc when ucd is so close? please help. Im STRESSED!!!!

I don't think anybody really picked up on this. The Boxing Club in UCC is really really good. I've joined many clubs, and gone to many trainings but the Boxing Club is like either one or two of the best clubs on campus, with the Canoe Club too. The trainings are really tough but rewarding. The trainers really seem to know what they're on about and the lads sparring seem to enjoy it. Only just started the club this term though..

i went to UCD in 03 and did not like it at all. Much too big, impersonal and not an easy place to make friends. Lots of people going there have notions about themselves - D4 types and the likes. I didn't like the campus very much either and i was paying 120 euro per week rent, living in Ranelagh in a tiny apartment. As opposed to the 80 euro a week i pay in Cork now for a decent sized house. The UCC campus is much nicer, its easier to get around and i'm ten mins walk from the city centre. Its a slower more relaxed way of life down here.

I'd chose Cork over Dublin every time, but that's just me. You have to decide what is right for you, what kind of lifestyle you want and if you dont mind living further away from home.
