When I connect an audio cable from the MacBook to the TV there is a humming noise coming from the speakers of the TV. Anyone know why this is happening and how to stop it?

A hum may be caused by a faulty earth, which I would guess that it may be coming from your cable. What sort of cable are you using to connect them together? And what sound source are you using from the Macbook?

Is it still there with the charger disconnected ? Are you hearing the normal audio from the MacBook as well or just the hum ?

    I'm using this

I plugged it in the headphone jack on the Mac and in a 3.5" socket behind the TV, which is for connecting audio when using the VGA socket.

Can you give the make/model of the tv ? Also can you answer the questions I asked above ?

It's a Technosonic TV, the cheap Tesco TV from Christmas '06. I think it was still making the noise without the charger being plugged in and the noise only comes from the TV.

It's hard to be sure with such limited info, but the obvious things to check are:

Do you get any of the sound you are supposed to hear from the TV or is it JUST a loud hum with none of the original sound ?

Not familiar with the MacBook but in the audio out settings in System Preferences is the output set to line out or headphone ?

Are all the connectors pushed home fully ? If this sockets hasn't been used for a while try plugging in and out the plug a few times to clean any dirt away.

To remove the possibility that the Macbook is at fault plug that end of the 3.5mm lead into an iPod or other audio player, do you hear sound now ? I presume the tv will have the relevant input source selected to vga or which ever EXT input applies to the vga connector.

Silly question, are you positive that the 3.5mm socket you've connected to is an INPUT ?

Does the tv have an optical input ? Your Macbooks headphones/line out socket also doubles up as a toslink optical output.

I do get sound out of the TV from music that is playing from the Macbook. Thanks for all the tips above. I will try them out later. Thanks.

I would try setting the volume on the mac to a medium level and using the telly to control the volume. That happens when I have the volume all the way to the top on my iPod
