Meself and afew mates are going to Portugal in October for a 4 day golfing trip but the norm for all courses we've checked require proof of GUI handicaps, none of us are members and we dont intend to join clubs as we literally play 2/3 times a year..
I'm aware that this thread may offend true golfers but can anyone suggest a way around this, we would welcome all thoughts,
On the other hand can anyone ,not finding this thread offensive, please advise of any courses that don't require this proof..
We are staying about 30 mins from Faro airport and are willing to travel..

Again for the true golfers out there i apologise sincerely ..:(

My old club's handicap certs were just small (pink would you believe!!:o)cardboard things. Get a mate or someone with access to a printer to make up some fake cards. Use a club name and make them look official. Make up handicaps and get someone to sign them. All you'll have to do is show them so don't worry about them checking them out or anything... as long as they look convincing then you'll be fine...

Not a very clever idea. Golf is a game of honesty and self regualtion.

I can't believe a serious golfer would suggest this as a solution.....

Perhaps if they joined a society and got the society to issue them a society handicap??

At the end of the day, it all comes down to what you are comfortable with - and if you are comfortable telling lies and being dishonest then that's your call but not what I would do.

To be fair to the OP the lads are not playing in a competition and are only having a few games whilst on hols, so are harming no one. A society handicap would not be recognised, yet society golfers are well able to play and know the rules, etc.. I can't see any major difference.

Good luck OP hope the trip goes well.

Most clubs in Spain/Portugal say they require proof but having played in Spain and Portugal (Palmares, Penina & VilaSol) on a few occassions I've never been asked.

You should be fine as long as you don't look like total hacks. They should be glad of your €!

:D Fair enough. Your last sentence says it all though...

I personally would do it if it meant the difference between getting a game or not. I wouldn't be harming anyone.

As already said though, most likely you won't need any handicap id when you get there as long as you look/sound the part. I'd take a few printed sheets just as back up though.

You should be fine, this is all you have to worry about. As long you look the part, aren't holding up play, messing on buggys and stuff you'll be fine. I dont know what you're like but the fact that you're even asking would suggest to me that you're not too bad. You're probably a hell of a lot more respectable than some of the official GUI high highcappers Ive had the "pleasure" of playing with.

I find this self righteous post absolutely hilarious after looking at your sig:pac:

You only get a swipe card if you have a handicap so doesn't really help in this case. Only time i can remember needing a handicap cert was when i played the old course. Don't think a swipe card would've washed that day. May well do in spain/portugal though.

I understand the sentiment that you are saying but the only reason you are saying it Graeme is because you actually have a handicap. You are a serious golfer as far as I can make out from your posts in the past and if you thought about it you will probably have a GUI for the rest of your life!!
If someone does not have one then they are not in the same category at all.
I have played over there on several occasions and only once was it an issue. The only reason it came up was that 4 of us wanted to play off the back markers and the starter wanted to know what handicaps we were. Three of us had the necessary Certs so the Starter allowed us hit off and after seeing all four Tee shots was happy we could play to an accepted standard.
It has always seemed to me that the requirement of Certs is to make sure that all players are at least serious about the game and are not just holiday heads just putting in a day.
Personally, and it upsets me to say it knowing that I have to agree with slumped but I dont think I would forge a cert to play but then again I think I will always have one.......

It looks like we'll have to forge some certs by the looks of things.
We are not normally dishonest people- we just need proof to play a couple of rounds of Golf in the sun so thanks to all for your replies and sorry for bringing up the issue of bad morals etc..

I presume it's Villamoura you will be going to? If so, I have played on most of the courses there. The only time I was asked for a cert was on the Old Course. So guys had some certs which I had forged for them. It was no issue. They are all righteous and upstanding members of the community and suffered no ill effects from their life changing moral dilemma. One's guys head fell off some days later, I did blame the certs, but it turned out to be nothing got to do with it.

Jeez i hope none of our heads fall off, i've gone to my local parish priest , an avid golfer and 7 handicapper , He said that he'll vouch for us at the pearly gates should we be 50/50 or less chance of getting inside, but he reckons that we may be ok seeing as how its just to play afew rounds of golf we're after.. As we're not forging certificates for child trafficing- gun running etc. he says we shouldn't worry too much...
