does anyone else think that ebay have got a little mean with their charges?

i sold two items in april to a total amount of €46 and one item in may to the amount of €37.

I got an email today saying that they are charging me €7.28 charges. I presumed that charges for listing came straight out of your credit card once the item is listed or are these extra charges? confused, angry and confused!

From what I recall when I was selling the charges are all bundled up and you're sent a invoice at the end of the month to pay for all your auctions; hence no, they would not deduct it directly from your credit card.

does anyone else think they are rather high?

I kinda just copped that from the €132 I've made selling stuff over the past month, Ebay + PAypal have taken about €25

They admit themselves its 'death-by-small-charges'. You have to watch things like gallery and starting bids which bump your fees, and the selling price then has its own fee. Then paypal take their cut. Its hard to sell cheap items for profit alright.

But to see if you were overcharged youll have to go through the fees with a fine tooth comb.

What is scandalous is the fact that ebay have removed any protection for buyer and seller unless you pay/take paypal (which they charge the seller and they own). They are effectivley making massive money from sellers with little return.

Ebay can charge excessively because they know people can't go anywhere else.
If it were a level playing field ebay would have died a long time ago.

Nothing stops another company from starting competative business except that minor things called trust which is what you're paying for and that they worked hard to build up.

After all you can buy through any other online page or adds at the back of a paper if you want to no one is holding a gun to your head saying if you don't shop on ebay you're going to get killed yet people keep on returning. Why? Because customers in general feel it is more trustworthy AND the prices offered are good enough to motivate the premium.

Completely disagree.:) Ebay is slowly turning into a flea pit full of scammers. Theres more cheap tat on there from china than anything else, and any search for practically any item will throw up some very dubious auctions in the mix. The reason people use ebay, plain and simple, is the market reach. It is so huge it's now a household name like coca-cola. Noone else has the same impact or potential customer base. People put up with the problems for the same reason they use windows software. Popularity.

Ebay have the monopoly. Other similar companies can't survive because sellers won't go to them because ebay is the most popular, and hence hold their monopoly.
This allows abuse such as terrible customer care and excessively high charges.

ebid.ie, qxl.co.uk ..etc all offer(ed) as good a service but can't get the sellers.

I don't regard ebay as any more or less trustworthy than any other auction site. You are dealing with individual sellers not ebay. When things go wrong ebay are desperate to wipe their hands of any responsibility. Any excuse to wiggle out of their flawed buyer protection policy.
I've been burned on ebay and I'm sure many other readers here have.

i have to disagree that ebay is becoming a flea pit, there are thousands of sellers operating businesses on ebay and earning millions from selling high end items!

if your annoyed at paying fees, then why not wait until a promotion day?
also, gallery fees are free from may til september
