Hi, I have a question. Some of you do weddings, sporting events etc.

How many of you are IPPA members or do you think it makes a difference?

I'm just curious more so than anything?

I am not a member of the IPPA, and you dont need to be a member of the ippa to get into sport events

Your post was the first I ever heard of them.

There are other similar organisations too, such as SWPP.

I've certainly never needed to join a body like these for access to any sporting events.

Not sure how useful they'd be for portrait and weddings either, aside from any perceived advantage.

I got asked in Germany at a sporting event (last week) to show my press card, I was never asked before to show any kind of ID or press card...

99% of the time, you will never need a card! here in Ireland....

I was looking at their membership criteria. Seems to set a pretty high standard and I was just curious if anyone had submitted any work with a view to becoming a member?

It's funny that some of you have never heard of them as they note one of the benefits of membership is

"Listing in the IPPA website that is promoted extensively to consumers, business and government interests."
    :D

I know what you mean. Once I was asked for my press card at an event here. Since there is no real formal press ID card (in general), I thought about just making my own. Simple details - a photo, name, organisation (if any), expiry date, and contact details on back.

Some organisations (such as the FAI) do have a formal press ID card though.

Don't the NUJ issue press cards?

    Paul,
The FAI, Irish Rugby, GAA, all say you must show your Press Card as ID, but as you know... the people working on the events dont have the time to be looking at press cards...

I applied for a event in the USA, and they asked for my passport Number, and a press card number (Tennis gig), and passport image

But in Ireland, you need to have a good web site, and like Paul said..make your own card.,....

yes you can get a press card off the NUJ

you need to show them some of your images published in the media.... etc..

Press cards (ID) are more than anything else, just a form of photo ID that an event can use to verify you are who you say you are. It carries no weight, and no specific authorisation to attend or photograph an event. Just because you have a press card certainly doesn't mean it will get you any access.

I've attended some events where I have been asked for photo ID (not specifically a press card), and I've been at other events where you just have your name checked off a list of authorised photographers.

But, if you really want a press id card - try here. It'll only cost you $4.95 + P&P. :D Or try here (boards filtering - the site is you finish it .com ). More expensive at $28. Or for the Delux Press ID at a price of $48.

    Well worth getting. :D

The NJU is the main press card in Ireland, I have taken images all over europe and in New Zealand, and you don't get asked if you have a press card, all they want to know if you are going to get the pics in the media....

Of course the images will be submitted to the media. But, it's the editor's choice if they are printed or not. :D

I guess the more events you cover, the more your face/name will be known, so it then gets easier to get access to other events.

Maybe we should get ID cards for I.A.B.P - Irish Association of Boards Photographers (name is not my idea). :)

there are only something like 300 members of the IPPA. many professionals prefer not to join as they are seen by some to be a little restrictive.

as far as i know you need a recommendation along with submitting your pics etc to them. which obviously is difficult if you don't know any one in it.

they have a code of ethics which is good. but it also says stuff like if you are asked to help by another IPPA member you are hevaily encouraged to help them,... i.e. by tutoring etc. this is great if you join when you 're starting out but i'm not so sure it'd be of any benefit when you are experienced and don't have time to be helping out newbies.

think they are good for training classes.

also remember that you need in excess of €6M in public liability insurance to join in the first place!

if ya wanna join join, but it says nothing about your competence or lack there of really.

The NUJ said to me that you must have a full time photographers job to be eligible to join them. Munster once asked me for my press card and I showed them my FAI pass and they just let me through. The newspaper I supply images to are going to issue their own cards to acknowledge we work for the press.

The IPPA are a group of photographers who, by and large, equate photography to brain surgery. You would sware molecular science was like learning the alphabet compared to the amazing work that they do.

Have a look at their windows around the country and if you see an original portrait, group photo or wedding snap, give ma a call. They are very rare indeed. From past experience...........

I have a NUJ press card but I've yet to actually use it anywhere... I'm always afraid to turn up somewhere and flaunt the card to get in somewhere in case it doesn't work!

I think you'll find having the card is only useful as identification, and not as an entry pass.

Yeah, I should have thought as much! Useless! :p
