I've started training for a triathlon and I'm looking for a heart monitor to help me.

I know nothing about them and what features I should be looking for.

Can any one recommend one for me?

It really depends what you are going to use it for. For example if you just want to be aware of your training HR to check you are training at the correct intensity, I would go for the cheapest one from a respected brand (e.g. garmin or polar). If you are going to use it swimming, check it is waterproof.

When you go beyond this it all gets confusing. I have a HRM with a gps, one that links to my bike cadence, one that downloads to my computer all my training information, interval times, max and average measurements, altitude, bike power output,

A final thing to check is the batteries. My garmin is charged by usb to my computer. My polar has to be sent back to the manufacters for a battery change. However the garmin battery life is less than 10 hours (I can only dream f finishing my race in less than 10 hours) and is not waterproof. My polar lasts years and is waterproof.

At this stage I'm just looking for one to help me with my training.

Not sure if I I'd need it for swimming because from what I've read here it’s difficult to read while swiming.

The only ones I've seen are in the Argos catalogue.

Where would be the best place to buy one?

I bought a very basic one in Halfords for about €45. It shows current heart rate and what proportion of time your heart spent in a particluar range as set by you. Nothing fancy but it works.
