Just Bought a Wii Today - What Do You Recommend?

Well I took the plunge and bought a Wii today. I got the extra Wiimote and nunchucky thing. I bought it with the intention of mainly playing it with my girlfriend, but whether that will happen or not is another thing!

So what do you guys and girls recommend now? What should I do indeed what can I do with the Wii? I see there are a few channels available and forgive me if I have this wrong as I'm a Wii virgin but you can buy extra channels or something like that right?

I don't intend for this to be a serious gaming machine as I'm also lucky enough to have a PS3 so it's mainly just for fun.

Many thanks for any advice. I apologise if this thread has been done to death. I searched for similar threads, went back as far as December last year and didn't see anything.

First thing to do is hook it up to the internet. The Wii has a built in wireless adapter, so if you have a wireless router, you can get connected very easily. The News and Weather channels have a novelty factor (if nothing else!). The browser is also pretty nifty.

The other blank channels can be filled with Virtual Console releases (emulated games from the golden years of SNES, Megadrive, NES, Master System, C64, Neo Geo and N64). The games are overpriced, but if you have a favourite from those machines, it might be worth looking up.

Also, WiiWare launched last week. These are original brand new games that you can buy and download.

    List of WiiWare games

Hope thats enough to get you started!

Wii Play is great fun if you're looking for something to play with the gf. Oh, and Mario Kart Wii!

If you want some single player games, I strongly suggest Resident Evil 4 and Mario Galaxy.

+1 for setting up the internet as well.

Thanks for the speedy reply guys. I'm just on the Wii shop thing at the moment. I'm not too fussed about the older games but I'll certainly check out WiiWare. Is Wii Play something I can easily pick up from the shops in Dublin?

One other thing. With the Wii being a relatively low resolution machine is it worth getting the component cable?

They'll still charge you the cost of the highest priced one...

If you have a decent TV then I'd definitely get the component cable.
As for games I'd say Mario Kart & Super Mario Galaxy are must haves.
Herself and the kids enjoy a bit of Big Brain Academy as well.
Got wii fit at the weekend and they seem to have taken to that too.

+1 for Mario Kart and the Internet
I'd also recommend Warioware:Smooth Moves for a multiplayer game. You could probably pick it up for 30 - 40 euro too.
...and then... get YOURSELF No More Heroes :p

Thanks guys. I'll look into getting Big Brain Academy (I reckon the GF would like this) and Mario Kart, I'm not so pushed on Mario Galaxy. Wii Fit will also be a certain push.

When you guys keep saying the Internet, I presume you mean I should buy the internet channel? I have a PC and I can also surf the web on the PS3 so what's the advantage of having it on the Wii?

Boom blox, watch a few you tube videos of it!

Any game that can get my game hating GF to play must be doing something right!

The browser not comming for free on the wii is a joke, its not great.

You might also consider looking into the twilight hack, you can run some homebrew on the wii with it, although its really in early stage so far. Pretty easy to do too

Component cable is better than SCART in terms of clarity and colour (naturally), but it does bring out a lot of the graphical problems of the games e.g. jaggies. It does look better on a HD TV (definitely not as blurry) but neither is perfect unfortunately.

If you are looking for games, Mario Galaxy, Zack and Wiki and No More Heroes are three very good ones. VC and WiiWare are probably the only worthwhile extras: others are novelties that wear off quickly (Mii / Internet channels)

Sorry to hijack the thread but I also picked up the Wii console and Wii Fit package Game last Friday. Good price too!
You have to pay to connect to the Web using the Wii - wtf? Also how does this work, also with downloading the virtual games, is it Credit Card as on any other online store or what?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 55,571 ✭✭✭✭Mr E

Its free to get online (you'll have access to the shop, weather channel, news channel etc.), but you have to pay for the browser ("Internet Channel"). The browser was free for a few months when it came out, but I think its 500 points now (which is about a fiver).

As for VC games, you can pay for them securely through the shop channel with your credit card, or you can buy points in any game shop in the form of vouchers. You just enter the voucher code in the shop to redeem the value.

buy the GAME scart cable for wii. its 6 quid and dramatically improves the picture quality. as for games, mario galaxy is just superb.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 28,789 ✭✭✭✭ScumLord

Big Brain academy is ****e. You spend more time flicking through menus and listening to a condom tell you how stupid you are than actually playing the games, which last no more than 3 - 5 minutes.

Have you played Mario before? The new one is just as infuriating. If you like Mario then this would probably be the best one ever, it is addictive but didn't draw me back to play again and again.

Mario Kart is great in multiplayer but a bit of a pain in single player.

Wii play is ok, it comes with a remote too.

Excite Truck is a great racing-type game. Nothing like your run-of-the-mill racing game though: you hold the wiimote sideways to steer, tilting back or forwards when you get some air and you get 'stars' for things like smashing your opponents' trucks and narrowly missing trees :D Fast and furious and great fun!

Rayman Raving Rabbids is great for mini-games, some good multi-player stuff as well as a (kind of) story arc for single-player.

Few other good 'uns but these two and WiiSports get the most play-time on our Wii :)

    Enjoy your new toy!

Excellent. Thanks for all the advice so far guys, plenty to keep us going!

Ravin Rabbids came with mine, one for the kids for sure. Mini games were not engageing enough, that and Wii play got traded in quick smart.

We bought the Tiger Woods 2008 PGA - even though we're not really into golf (ie, watching it on tv) but it's brilliant, better than on the wii sports package. The graphics are good and you get loads of choices in courses. Got the wii fit board at weekend as well - well worth a try even though exercise isn't my thing I reckon this makes it enjoyable.
    Enjoy!!!!

I'd certainly recommend Mario Kart Wii as well, it's great fun.

Mario and Sonic at the Olympic Games is good multiplayer fun also.

I haven't read the rest of the thread but my favorites (in no order) are

    Mario Kart Wii
    Pro Evolution Soccer
    Zelda Twilight Princess
    Metriod Prime Corruption
    Mario Galaxy

I also recently got Boom Blox which is a fun multiplayer.

    Well games I personal recommend

    Mario Kart Wii
    Super Mario Galaxy
    Legend of zelda Twlight Princess
    Resident Evil 4
    No More Heroes
Super Smash Brothers Brawl (not released here till end of June but I have played on an import copy)
    Pro Evolution Soccer 2008
    Zack and Wiki
Wii Sports (you probably have this)

As for the component cable I used it but have seen graphical problems like tiny flicking black spots in Super Smash Brothers Brawl. Has much better clearer picture though.
No More Heroes looks horible but I have not seen it with standard cable.
Resident Evil 4 suffers really low resolution with or without it (slightly better with it)
Pro Evolution Soccer 2008 is alot better with it. Eliminates annoying flicker.

Thanks for the replies guys. It seems a better cable is a certainty so. I have no component sockets spare so I'd have to unplug something. How do you think an RGB scart cable would fair?
It seems I'll be getting (at some point) Wii Fit, Mario Kart, Wii Play and perhaps Zelda and Mario Galaxy. Heh I suggested the idea of Wii Fit to the GF and surprisingly she was quite keen on the idea.

I've been playing the bowling from Wii Sports with her the last day or two and OOhhhhh the idea of the Wii is lost on her. Super competitive and serious.... heh heh it's funny winding her up.

Is pro evolution any good? I was thinking of getting that next, good two player?

Eh? That's not right, she's supposed to over react and accuse you of calling her fat/ugly..

Yeah I know, I was surprised too. I think getting the Wii might have been a BADDD idea. She's hooked on the bowling and it's turned her into a monster. We were playing the other night and she just wouldn't give up..... game after game after game............ ;:p

You gotta get Boom Blox, it's a great game to get into and again like other Wii games, makes my wife super competitive. We unintentionally lost 3 hours of our lives to it the other evening, I think she was enjoying beating me fairly often and was happy to continue for hours playing it. Only that it got late and we were both knackered we would have continued on for a few more hours.

Just on No More Heros, why do people think it's so great? I got it a few weeks ago but am seriously unimpressed. It plays a little bit like Grand Theft Auto when you are driving about but then it just seems like button bashing when it comes to fighting.

Also the review I read said it was gorey but the baddies just explode into black dots - is this a default setting that can be changed?

I've played if for a couple of hours and am thinking of trading it in. I never been so disappointed with a game that has had such good reviews. Am I missing something and need to give it more time?

No More Heroes is a game that shouldn't really be judged by typical standards - it comes across as more of a satire of videogames and gaming culture - exaggerated otaku main character, kitsch design (the high score screen kicks ass) and other satirical swipes. Its a really intelligent game full of surreal humour that subverts conventions constantly and is very funny on occasion. It could be argued that the gameplay sometimes lacks (dodgy driving / open world for example) but other parts - such as the menial jobs - are actually pretty vital to the games themes: you grind through the game to get to the good bits (e.g. the assasinations). I think the combat is excellent, though, and while not perfect, like Bioshock it is a game with more than meets the eye. Maybe I'm reading too much into it, but its the cleverest game I've played in a while, although the gameplay isn't always amazing (some of the bosses are hugely irritating).

As for the gore, blood was removed from European release and replaced with black pixels.
