Sometimes when I take a picture taken with the camera sideways I get a dark shadow on the right, I read up a week or so ago what causes this but I'll be fecked if I can recall what it was or where I read it.
Funny thing is if I hold the camera sideways on the left hand side? it's fine.

    :o

Are you using a flash at the time?

Sounds to me that you have finger on the flash window, as suggested Fajitas.
Also finger in front of the lens could do something similar.

    Weirdest answer I've found.

Yeah, was a flash being used...was at a pub gig. can't remember if my finger was on flash or covering it, could easily be so.
The answer I read though was not that....but somehow I think it could be that!

are you using a hood?cos if u are take it off and try again!

I don't use hoods, I tested again last night in bedroom and it wasn't my hand on flash, I think it may be the shadow from my hand or the strap shadow or me just not holding the camera straight enough to keep away my hand or strap shadow, I got lots of shadow free pics last night.

phew, it's not just me so! I often get this also and I am using a Speed light (SB600). I found if I rotated the flash head it would eventually fix the problem. I often wondered was it a shadow cast by the lens barrel?? Dunno!

    What shutter speed?

Chances are it was 200/250 - Try bringing your speed down to 1/160th
