    Why does my laptop run slower when connected to a LAN/WLAM. Example; opening documents, my computer etc????:confused:

    There could be a number of reasons for this to be honest, but the most obvious one that would stand out to me is that when your connected to you LAN/WLAN
    you mean your connecting to your broadband router - i.e. the internet?.

    Obviously certain programmes invoke once you get connected to the internet such as MSN messenger starts, Skype, Anti Spyware and anti virus updates all of which take up memory resources on your laptop.

    The best thing you can do is to open task manager when you connect to the network and see which processes are using the most CPU/memory resources and work from there..

    Do you have Vista?/Norton?/McAfee installed? How much memory is in the machine? How old is it? What model/brand is it? Have you tried it in "Safe Mode with Networking" to see if its any faster?.

    I have XP, Symantec, 2GB of RAM, 200 GB harddrive, 1.66 ghx processor. It's a Toshiba sattelite pro U300 and its about 4 weeks old.

    How do I try it in safe mode?

    When you turn the machine on an see the "Toshiba" logo disappear on startup, start pressing the F8 button on the keyboard repeatidly, thiswill bring up the Safe Mode boot options. One should be Safe Mode with Networking. Once it loads windows in safe mode you should be able to log in (it will look slightly different as not all graphic drivers loaded) and check your internet access (try it through your notwork connection,not over wireless, Im not 100% sure if that work work in safe mode)
    If there is a drastic difference then it could be a 3rd party driver / software thats loading up in normal windows thats slowing your machine down.

    Click Start->Run-> Type msconfig,press return.
    That gives you a list of the programs and services windows loads when starting up. Untick any ones you don't want starting but be careful!

    Cheers. I had a look but I'm not going to mess with it. I'll leave it in somewhere when I get a chance.
