Inspiron 1721 - Dual Boot?

Today I got a Dell Inspiron 1721 from the Outlet store that came preinstalled with Vista Home Premium. However, I want to dual boot with either XP Pro or XP Pro x64.

The initial problem I see is the fact that Dell website doesn't offer any drivers for XP of any shape or form (I presume this model was only ever shipped with Vista), so I'm sort of screwed drivers-wise.

The laptop also has two 120gig harddrives in a RAID array (they are both counted as one 240gig HDD in the OS), so I'm guessing I'd probably need to slipstream drivers for this RAID/SATA setup.

So, just wondering if anyone has this laptop that succeeded in replacing Vista with XP (especially x64), or dualboot both. And if so, were drivers hard to find?

If you are using xp sp2 then you should have no problems with sata drivers. Not too sure about raid though. Have you tried checking for drivers for the vostro 1700? They are more or less the same thing just a different colour. The vostros have the option to be shipped with xp.

I have just tried XP Pro with a slipstream used for this Dimension (XP SP2 wouldn't install on this Dimensin either without the RAID drivers), but without luck. I'm getting an odd "The file cdrom.sys is corrupted" after which it stops loading files. Don't think it's related, maybe the disc itself is now faulty

From Belarc Advisor, I've got info of drivers that I may need, like:
    AMD AHCI Compatible RAID Controller
    AMD RAID Console
    Microsoft iSCSI Initiator.

    More searching....

A quick search threw this up:
It has a couple of links for "alternative" xp drivers for this machine and some other advice.

Thanks for that Redisle, I'll read into that. I didn't notice it in any search I made.

For dual booting with XP and Vista , does XP not have to be installed first? Something about Vista being able to detect an older XP install and allow you to select dual booting Os's but not when it comes to XP detecting a Vista install?
Im not 100% sure on that but I remember it being mentioned before somewhere.

Nah, I managed ot dual boot on this Dimension with Vista installed first. It was relatively easy.

Anyway, I got the laptop running XP Pro now, though no Vista. Vista had to go along with the RAID setup, and after some many hours of swearing, it finally installed XP!

The procedure might have went much easier if the laptop only had one HDD.

Anyway, this thread was very good as well as links posted above.
