This free software checks virtually every software package on your PC to ensure that you have the latest version installed. It only checks for security related version updates. It’s a bit like Microsoft update, but covers most software products – not just Microsoft. It seems to me to be more on the ball in terms of updating than the “automatically check for updates” feature of many software packages. Where a vulnerability is detected, it offers a link to a fix-download.

I ran it on a new PC (1 month old) and it found security vulnerabilities in Sun Java, Opera and Adobe Flash that hadn’t been automatically updated by the packages themselves.

A paid-for version is available for corporate users that can keep every PC in the "domain" up to date.
