Journal club.....

    ....sounds geekier than chess club.

But would it work with people from so many different backgrounds here? People could attach/link a paper they like that the rest of the community might find interesting, and we could discuss it.

I'm away at the mo, and will be for a few days, so might not be able to get my hands on any journals for a bit. But I was areading a paper this week on the link between breastfeeding and childhood cancer. I think this is the kind of thing that would have broad general interest, as opposed to something about the molecular biochemistry of mitochandrial disorders, although many of us would find that very interesting.

I'm sure that, however specialised the area you work in, you might be able to present a paper or talk about a historic/sentinel experiment that everyone might think is interesting.

What do you guys reckon? Do most people who read this board have access to online journal articles in full text? Is it copyright infringement to attach PDFs to a post? I know when we have "journal club" in work we hand out copies of papers to all and sundry :P

Anyone want to get the ball rolling? Otherwise I'll see if I can get a reference for that breatfeeding paper in the library tomorrow.

Hmmm. Dunno. In theory, it sounds interesting, but after a long day reading academic papers and whatnot, do I want to do it on boards? There also may be a pretty limited audience for this type of thing, when you take into account people's varying interests and abilities/education.

Doesn't hurt to put up a link I suppose (I'd be surprised if someone came after you waving their copyright stick if the paper linked to was freely available online). And, it might prove to be a goldmine of pub-talk (I can be one of those "Actually-did-you-know-that" guys! Hurrah! ;) )

Yeah could be good, though it takes me a while to get through any papers I've to read.

Also, don't know how well discussions will work... what exactly is everyone's background. I'm a Physical Therapist also qualified in Holistic and Complimentary Therapies... so maybe I would see things alot differently to others coming from a more medical background!

Does sound good though, wouldn't mind reading papers of interest. Will have more time during the summer now too as I'm just finishing my exams now...about time!!!

    GEEK ALERT!!!!!!!!!!

ok this might be a good actually. as long as we don't get too technical on any one subject then we shouldn't alienate anyone in particular

In work we have institutional access and such reproduction, while not strictly ok, is acceptable.

Here however, I must insist against pdf or manuscript uploading.

You can link to any journal that is open access on the web but we'd be leaving ourselves open if we actually hosted links to off publication site copies of copyrighted material.

Sorry to be a pain guys.

Not interested in the journal bit, but Tallaght what's this link you read between breastfeeding and childhood cancer? I thought it was supposed to prevent it!

Link to pubmed access. Most people will have access. If people pm each other journals I'm not sure how we'd police that........... ;)

There's a lot of stuff that's accessible without being a subscriber. you just have to go digging. When i get back to college i'll have access again.

OK so I've started this up.

Don't know if it will work, but we'll see.

So, anyone can start a journal club thread. Just try and number them and put somehting brief in the title.

Anyone, whether you're medical/scientific or not can post a paper. Doesn't matter.

If it doesn't work we'll just kill it off. But if it does it might be interesting. I, for one, have no idea what's going on in the world of research outside of paeds.

Just make sure you pick good papers. I'm reviewing some manuscripts at the moment and I feel like smacking my head off the wall with some of the stupidity I'm seeing :(
